SaloonBox June 2015 Subscription Box Review
SaloonBox June 2015 Subscription Box

SaloonBox delivers artisan ingredients from local mixologists right to your door so that you can make craft cocktails at home. Each box will include all the ingredients needed to make that month’s drink including spirits, recipes, mixers, garnishments, etc. It should be noted that SaloonBox is currently in the Kickstarter phase and, according to their timeline, hope to be shipping to subscribers by the end of September.

The Box

As I mentioned SaloonBox is currently in the Kickstarter phase, but boxes will begin shipping to subscribers in September.

First Look

Before they closed their doors B and I used to subscribe to Julibox and always enjoyed making the cocktails they sent.  I smiled when I opened this because it looked just like what B and I have been wanting!

The Letter

The box included a letter about the contents of the box, the choices of liquor, information about this month’s mixologist, etc.

The Recipe

For the inaugural kit, SaloonBox selected “The Painkiller”.  It’s a classic cocktail made with rum, pineapple juice, coconut cream, orange juice and, as added by this month’s mixologist, lime juice.

~The Kraken Black Spiced Rum: I like dark rum so seeing this was great.  I knew just reading the recipe card that I would like this drink, but the dark rum part sealed it.  Kraken is produced in the Republic or Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean.

~Mixers: The box also included an orange, a lime, pineapple juice, coconut cream and nutmeg (garnish).  For some reason I wasn’t expecting fresh fruit but I love that they included it!  And I love that I didn’t let this sit outside at all.

Mixers / Garnishments

When I picked up this Lilly for Target juicer my intent was to use it as a jewelry holder.  But when I saw that I needed orange and lime juice I broke out the juicer.  It works perfect!  I actually wished I had more things to juice.  After I got all my ingredients combined, I mixed them (along with ice) in my shaker.  Then I poured it into a highball (also Lilly for Target) and went outside to enjoy it.  The drink was super easy to make and took no time at all.

Making the Drink

The drink was amazing!  I loved everything about it.  I went a little light on the rum this time, but next time I will go full-force.  I loved making this, reading about the cocktail and well, I loved drinking it.  I am a fan of the Painkiller for sure.

All Done!

I didn’t do a cost breakdown on this box, but I think B and I will end up being subscribers when they open their doors in September!  Right now if you want to learn more about them you can check out their Kickstarter campaign or their website.  What do you think about SaloonBox?  Is it something you’d try?

**SaloonBox left this comment below but I wanted to make sure to post it here too so no one misses it. “We’d like to offer anyone who sees this blog post the early bird special.  To get it go to our Kickstarter campaign, bit.ly/saloonbox and pledge to receive a kit.  Then send us a message so we know to include you in the early bird group.”

Too bad I have a moratorium on subscription boxes or I’d definitely try this out!

I almost spit out my drink (which is in a non-lilly glass). What are you still ISO? I have been hunting HARD these last few (well more than that) weeks. Lilly is making me crazy!

This looks like fun. I wonder if you can skip a month if you don’t like the key ingredient. Not sure I could do a whiskey one but I’d be all over vodka or rum. Or gin with elderberry…
