Colors & Curiosity Wonder Box

Last week Plum District had a deal on Wonder Box. Pay $10 and get the box, which has a $20 value. I’d never heard of Wonder Box before, but for $10 I thought heck, why not give it a try?  So I signed up and redeemed my coupon.  And the next day I got a shipping notification.  Amazing.  I liked Wonder Box already.

Someone was excited to get their hands on the Wonder Box!

I think it took maybe a week to arrive? L totally knew it was for him just by the packaging alone.

I already think it’s cute!

For some reason, I really like when I get a package and there is an envelope stuck to the top of it. It’s like getting a fun note with your present. Something like that anyways. Even if it’s just an invoice or packing list stuck in there, I still like it. For the record, this envelope had the information sheet about all of the projects, as well as, a “Keep Wondering” card with additional ideas.

Colors & Curiosity

The theme of the box I got was “Colors & Curiosity”. I am not sure if they have a different theme every month or if it depends on age or how exactly it works? A friend of mine got a box a few days before me and she got a totally different box with a different theme.

The information card

The box included three projects:
~Crayon Cupcakes
~Cool Kaleidoscope
~Sidewalk Sensation
And a recipe card for:
~Stained Glass Cookies

The projects.

I really liked how they were each packaged in their own little bag. All the items for the project were in the bags with a little card attached that had the instructions on it. So organized. So cute.

Project #1: Cupcake Crayons

The first project was Cupcake Crayons. We have made crayons like this before but L insisted we do the project right away.  I am pretty sure he just liked the name. According to the information sheet, kids develop: “color exploration; blending; textures; simple science”.

L got right to work.

L broke all the crayons, I peeled them (this is such a pain in the butt) and he put them in the “cupcake” mold. Teamwork!

Ready to go in the oven

We put the mold on a mini baking sheet and baked our “cupcake” for 20 minutes, just like the instructions said.

I love the way it turned out.

We peeked through the oven door a few times and loved the final result, a big chunky cupcake crayon! We haven’t used it yet, but I know it will work great. I very glad they sent Crayola crayons and not some cheap off-brand crayon because I don’t think this would work well with cheap waxy crayons.

Project #2: Cool Kaleidoscope

Project #2 was Cool Kaleidoscope.  This was L’s favorite (and mine too).  In this project, kids develop: “fine motor skills; color recognition; shape recognition”.  I was reading L the instructions and he took them very seriously.  So we talked about each of the shapes and colors of the plastic “gems” just like we were supposed to.

We might have just been happy with the plain tube?

I think I could have just given him the tube to play with and he would have been happy. Little boys love to yell “ECHO” through tubes like that at the top of their lungs. They also like to annoy their little dogs by chasing after them while making funny noises in the tubes.

All done! I will admit that I helped decorate the tube.  I just couldn’t resist those cute little paint dabbers.  And L loved the Kaleidoscope.  And it seems like it’s going to be easy to take apart and switch out the gems to make a totally new one!

Project #3: Sidewalk Sensation

The final project was Sidewalk Sensation. It’s a non-toxic chalk powder and when you add water, it turns into paint. I am kind of curious what the paint is made of?  It was super windy out yesterday and we had a busy day today, so we haven’t gotten a chance to try this out yet, but I will report back on it.

Recipe: Stained Glass Cookies

And like I mentioned before, the box also included a recipe card for Stained Glass Cookies. L and I have baked tons of things, but we have never made this. I think he will be totally amazed, so I am planning on doing this on the next rainy day!

What to do with your box

Oh, and box also included a card on what to do with your actual box! Instead of just throwing it away.  The paintball project sounds super fun and super messy which is right up our alley!  I can’t wait to try it.

Do you subscribe to Wonder Box?  What box did you get this month?  Thinking about subscribing?  Click here to get $10 off your first box!  I hate to admit it, but we’ll be adding this to our monthly roster too ;).

Disclosure: You guessed it, referral links! You click and buy, I get free Wonder Boxes. Which L needs. I mean who doesn’t need to get presents in the mail every month.  Everyone does.
