April Hungry Globetrotter

Hungry Globetrotter makes monthly deliveries to home chefs, culinary enthusiasts, families and busy professionals who enjoy the flavors of the world in the comfort of their own home through a month-to-month food box delivery service.  The idea behind their World Dinner Club is to help you discover and create cuisines from all over the world without being intimidating.

The Box

Hungry Globetrotters ships via USPS and arrived very quickly.  I thought the box was cute and I loved that I knew right away who it was from!

Second Look

I had NO idea what to expect from my Hungry Globetrotter box and did not know what this month’s “theme” was.  Every month Hungry Globetrotter selects a different world cuisine and provides you with a recipe, sauces and spices to help you cook a dinner that’s outside of your normal routine.  Oh, and they don’t want it to take you forever to prepare either.  Ain’t nobody got time for that.

The Information Card

This month’s Hungry Globetrotter takes us to Peru for the “Inca Trail Tastes Dinner” and includes all the spice and “things” necessary to make Pollo a la Brasa (aka Peruvian Roast Chicken).  The meal is typically cooked in a rotisserie over coals, but Hungry Globetrotter has figured out how to make it just as fabulous in your oven at home with their recipe.

One of the recipe cards includes a grocery list of items you need to purchase before you make this at home, which in this case includes garlic, limes, olive oil, salt & pepper and chicken.  Nothing fancy, nothing crazy.  You will not be running all over town trying to find this stuff.  Hungry Globetrotter sends you all that stuff that you would normally get super annoyed trying to locate at the grocery store.  I swear, I have spent more time in Kroger trying to find things I didn’t even know whey were or even what aisle to look in than I would like to remember.  Here are those items you know you’d never be able to find:

~Kaniwa Whole Grain ($10.99): Pollo a la Brasa is typically served with french fries, but Hungry Globetrotter has made the recipe a bit more healthy by using kaniwa instead.  And yeah, I had never heard of kaniwa before I opened the box either.  It’s crunchier and less fluffy than quinoa, but is packed with protein, zinc, iron and calcium.  I’m already in love and I have never even tried it.  I wonder if they sell this anywhere near me?

~Zocalo Aji Amarillo Paste ($8.60): This sauce is a “spicy sweet flavor” and goes well with just about anything.  In this case you are going to use it to marinate the chicken and also for an aji mayo!

~Vann’s Spices Organic Oregano ($6.96): When I saw this, I was all, but we have oregano, why are they sending me this? And then I read the card.  This oregano is much stronger than your standard grocery store flair, which is better for the recipe!

~Spicely Organic Ground Cumin ($3.99):  Again, we have cumin, but this is more flavorful.  I think I might compare them in some way to see what I think?  I don’t think I ever realizes the same spice could be different?

All totaled, the April Hungry Globetrotter “Inca Trail Tastes Dinner” had a value of $30.54.  Plus of course the recipe, which I am not sure how to value.  And after reading all  about Pollo a la Brasa I am SO excited for B to make it.  It sounds totally delicious and honestly, I think I’d even be able to do it (don’t tell B this though ;)).  The active prep + cook time on this is 70-80 minutes, with most of that being cook time.  That’s totally doable!
