Young Authors’ Treasure Box is a brand new subscription box for kids. Each box contains 4-7 reading books (paperback or hardcover), pens, pencils, bookmarks, DIY blank writing books, designer paper, pencil grips, and reading and writing guides.
Young Authors’ Treasure Box ships in a USPS Medium Flat Rate Box. The rectangle one ;). The actual Young Authors’ Treasure Box fits nicely in the box. It was packed so full this month that they had to tape it shut. That makes me happy.
Since Young Authors’ Treasure Box is so new and I didn’t have time to do any homework on the box before it arrived (I usually try to at least look something up if I’m not familiar with the box), I was clueless on what I would find when I opened the box. But I was pretty pleased when I saw what was inside!
Each Young Authors’ Treasure Box will follow a theme, genre or author to expose young authors and writers to a variety of works. Boxes contain age and grade appropriate reading and writing adventure material. There is an overlap in grades to accommodate interest and levels within a grade. We got the Kindergarten through 2nd grade box, which features authors’ Mem Fox and Ezra Jack Keats this month.
Here’s what was included:
Mem Fox Books:
Mem Fox is an Australian author who promotes and encourages reading aloud to your children. The information card includes Mem Fox’s Ten Read Aloud Commandments, all of which I think are amazing and will use when I read to my kids.
~Koala Lou ($6.30): This sweet story is about a Koala named Koala Lou who enters the Bush Games to win her mother’s attention. Only she doesn’t win and thinks her mother won’t love her anymore ;(. But she finds out that her mother does love her. No matter what. A sweet story for ANY age.
~Night Noises ($6.30): Night Noises is a story about an elderly Grandma who is alarmed by noises outside of her houses. She finally opens the door and finds a huge surprise! It’s a perfect book to read using some of Ms Fox’s commandments, which include reading with animation and joy! I really believe that the ton you use to read with does impact your children’s enjoyment of the book!
Ezra Jack Keats Books:
I’m not going to lie, I had to look up both of the featured author’s to learn more about them. It turns out that Mr. Keats is best known for introducing multiculturalism into mainstream American children’s literature! I had no idea and think that’s fabulous!
~Peter’s Chair($6.29): When I first saw this book I was like yeah, I’ve never seen this before. And then I flipped through it and realized I DID know it. In fact, I remembered reading it (and loving it) as a little girl! I cannot wait to read this to L tonight! And of course I will tell him how I liked the book as a kid, which I am sure he will think is cool. Is it bedtime yet???
~Pet Show ($6.29): I can’t recall reading this as a child, but I am almost certain I did. It’s a story about a neighborhood pet show and a little boy who wants to bring a cat who lives nearby. Only at the last minute he can’t find the cat and has to come up with someone else. It’s very cute and I know L will love it!
Other Items:
~My Picture-Word Journal ($3.29): I love this journal! Each letter has spots for 7 pictures. You draw the picture and then write the word of the picture you draw. For A, you’d draw an apple and then write apple. I love idea behind this and I think L is really going to enjoy it.
~Where Are You? ($3.49) and Look at Our Patterns ($3.49): These books are for PreK to Grade 1 and will be a perfect fit for L. I want to make sure that he doesn’t forget everything he learned in preschool this summer, so I plan to work with him using books like this. They make learning fun, which I think is important!
~Write-A-Story Book ($0.79) and Blank Journal (~$2): I always enjoy seeing what little book L makes at school and I think we are going to have a great time making some of our own this summer!
~Assorted Supplies (~$5): The box also included various reading and writing related supplies, including pencils, a pencil sharpener, book marks, an eraser and a worm word spacer. Ohh and a “Parts of a Story” cootie catcher, which B has already made and played with ;).
All totaled I came up with a value of $43.24 for the Young Authors’ Treasure Box. A great deal since the box itself is only $40. And what’s better is that I would never have selected these books on my own, so it’s nice to give L exposure to all sorts of books out there, not just ones I pick you know?
