I was expecting lots of boxes today and while most of them didn’t arrive as scheduled, my August Kiwi Crate arrived earlier than expected! You win some you lose some I suppose.
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and typically takes about a week to arrive to me. It wasn’t scheduled to come until Monday, but I’ll take an early package any day!
The August Kiwi Crate theme was “Fun With Flight” and includes two projects – “my flying kites” and “my rad rockets”. We went to a local fair this afternoon and then started on our Kiwi Crate projects when we got home – we needed a little “downtime” after spending the afternoon at the fair!
Project #1 – “My Flying Kits”:
The first Kiwi Crate project was “my flying kites” and included everything you need to build your own colorful kits that will really fly. It was low on the messiness scale, involved medium grownup involvement and involved discovering, moving – gross and creating.
L and I both did a kite, however, he did most of the decorating while I did most of the kite building. It was a fun project and the directions were super easy to follow. Next month I will take pictures of the directions – they have written instructions and pictures so L can follow along too.
The kite was a HUGE hit! We had just the right amount of wind this evening and L got it flying nicely! I can’t even tell you how thrilled he is by these kites.
Project #2 – My Rad Rockets:
The second Kiwi Crate project this month was “my rad rockets” and included everything you need to make your rockets and then launch them in the air. The project was low on the messiness scale, had high grownup involvement and involved discovering, moving – fine and exploring.
Once again L and I both worked on a rocket. I totally cheated and used a picture of L instead of drawing him into the window. We found these fairly easy to make as well, but we couldn’t get them to launch super high. It certainly wasn’t anything that I could measure on the flight scale that came in the box. I will have to have B look into this more because it’s likely that I put it on the launch pad incorrectly.
Explore More:
This month’s explore more included items to build and launch your own paper fliers. We have’t worked on this yet but probably will tomorrow.
Kiwi Crate has just launched a brand new magazine for kids called “explore!” which will be included in every crate going forward. It’s related to the theme for the month and includes stories (read), a few drawing activities (draw), a do it yourself section (make), find the differences / hidden pictures (play), snack ideas (eat), articles on things to discover and try (learn) and this month also included a paper airline to make! It basically reminds me of Highlights (the magazine for kids) and I love it!
The August box also included a previews of upcoming crates! Themes and activities are as follows:
~September: Theme: Modern Art . Projects: Hanging Mobile, Color Block Painting & Abstract Art Gallery
~October: Theme: Glowing Animals. Projects: Jellyfish Race, Glowworm Friend & Glowing Creatures.
~November: Theme: Storytelling. Projects: Story Theatre, String Puppet & Finger Puppets.
They all sound great, but I think I am most excited for October!
