December Homegrown Collective

The Homegrown Collective, who kindly sent me this box to review, includes seasonally appropriate, professionally curated products that deliver the satisfaction of living a more self-sufficient & sustainable lifestyle to your doorstep each month.

The Box

The Homegrown Collective ships via USPS Priority Mail. They usually ship near the end of the month (sometimes I won’t even get the box until the following month), but this month they shipped early because of the holidays. This one shipped on the 20th and I received it on the 24th, so that 2 Day Priority Mail didn’t quite work out.

First Look

I wasn’t expecting the box to arrive so early and hadn’t even had a chance to guess what was inside this month.  Even from the first lookI still couldn’t figure out what the projects were going to be.

The Information Cards

The December Homegrown Collective theme was “Naturally Essential Home Remedies & Cure-Alls” and included the following projects:

~Herbal Tintures: I have to tell you, I had no idea what a tincture was before yesterday.  It turns out it’s an “alcohol-based derivative of a fresh herb or other natural plant material as an alternative medicine”.  I have not started this yet, but it included your choice of herbs, which each have different benefits and takes about 30-45 days from start to finish.  Once finished, they recommend you take 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon at the first sign of a cold up to 4 times per day.  If anyone already uses this, I would love to know what you think and if you recommend it.

~Eucalyptus Vapor Cups: These are great!  I could not wait to get started on them and  couldn’t believe how easy it was to make my own shower bombs.  All that’s in them is baking soda and eucalyptus and essential lavender oil.  You mix it all, put it in the oven and bake for 20 minutes and that’s it!  I seem to now have a cold (not a surprise considering everyone else around me is sick) and cannot wait to test one of these out tomorrow!

~Essential Oil: Oregano, much to my surprise, is known as nature’s antibiotic.  It’s been shown to kill unwanted bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses.  I have never tried essential oils before (that I can recall anyway), but I’ve got nothing to lose (except this cold) so why not??

As usual, I didn’t do a value calculation for the December Homegrown Collective box since it would have been too difficult.  And as always, I wouldn’t describe The Homegrown Collective as a “value box”.  It’s a way to learn about and try new, “green” things and see what works for you.

Boxes are $48 /month and, of course, are even cheaper if you buy a 6-month ($39/month) or 12-month ($35.75/month) subscription!  If you are interested in subscribing, or just want to learn more, click here.  And don’t forget to use the code “RAMBLIN10″ to save $10 off your first box!!!
