January 2014 Birchbox

Today was another crazy (i.e. super fun) mail day around here and one of the boxes I received was my January 2014 Birchbox!

January 2014 Birchbox
The Box

Birchbox ships via UPS Mail Innovations which normal takes about 4-5 days to arrive to me.  This month, however, took about eight days.  I would assume something got mixed up somewhere along the way.

The Box in the Box

Birchbox is back to their normal boxes this month.  I do love their holiday / themed boxes, but their regular ones are pretty cute too!  My January 2014 Birchbox was Box #72 (*).  To find out what box # you got, go into your account and click on “Box” and then “Women’s Box”.  Scroll down to the “Box History” section and then click on “January 2014″.  The last number in your URL is your box number (mine says “bb72″ – meaning I have Box #72).  I explained how to review products for points a few months ago, so if you missed that, check it out here.

I cannot resist Birchbox spoilers (you can check the contents of your Birchboxes on the 10th of every month in your account), but you never really know what sizes your products are going to be until you receive your box.

The Information Card

The January 2014 Birchbox theme was “Go Time”, which was also the theme for the January Men’s Box.  It states they are “taking on more things to try, to conquer and to integrate in their lives” which begins with the new products in this month’s box.  Here is what I received:

~100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara ($7.50): I don’t know what this smelled like, but it wasn’t really fruity?  I thought the mascara itself was so-so.  Totally not a holy grail, but I also didn’t want to toss it out.  It didn’t add a ton of length like I like, however, it didn’t clump either, which is a good thing.

~Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk ($6.46):  Ohh, I really like this.  It smells amazing and made my hair less greasy right away!  I usually use Suave Dry Shampoo (you can’t beat the price), but I will probably save up my points and buy this one in the Birchbox shop.

~Paula’s Choice RESIST C15 Super Booster ($8.06): I’d need to use this for a few weeks to give a real opinion on it, but it’s suppose to brighten and firm skin.  I haven’t found a brightener product that I love, so maybe this will be the one?

Paula’s Choise RESIST C15 Super Booster

~Whish Three Wishes Body Butter ($3.52):  I have tried a few things from Whish, but never the Pomegranate scent.  At first I thought it was ick.  But after letting it settle in, I actually kind of liked it. Probably not enough to buy a full size, but I will happily use this one up.

~Ahmad Teas Assorted Teas ($0.53):  Meh.  Tea.  My cousin will be happy about this (I need to go up-north soon and give her this stash), but tea just isn’t my thing.

All totaled my 2014 January Birchbox had a value of $26.07.  Including the points I get for reviewing the products (which is equal to $5) and the points I got for purchasing the box (***) (which is equal to $1), the box had a real total value of $32.07.  Not my favorite box, but I am happy with four of the five products, so I would consider it a win!

Do you subscribe to Birchbox? Did you get your box yet this month? What number was it and what was in it?  If you don’t subscribe (it’s only $10/month) and are interested in learning more, click here.  Last I heard the wait list was only taking a few days (I’d love if someone could verify this though) so it might be a great time to join!

(*) If you want to see all the boxes this month, click here and change the 1 at the end to anything from a 2 to 84 since there were 84 (in comparison, last month there were 86 box variations) box variations this month.  Once again it was an insane number of boxes this month!!
(**) You only get points for purchasing the box if you buy an annual subscription (or 3-month, 6-months, etc.). You don’t get points if you are on a month to month subscription.

My husband got me the 6 months for Christmas. I received my welcome box from them, but nothing else since. When I sign into my account I get the your first box will be mailed to you shortly. So I have no idea when I will receive it.

    1. Jennifer

When did you get the first one?

  2. Bethany

You actually got all different items than I did. I got box number 2. I saw the tea in your pic and had a moment of sadness for you. I got that same tea in my first box and am totally not a tea fan.

    1. Jennifer

I am just glad I have someone to give it to! I’d feel bad throwing away all this tea I get!

    2. We got the same box 🙂 I hate tea too and always bring it to a friend at work. I wish they could mark my subscription as “no-tea / only chocolate” lol

I’ve had some lame issues with my past two boxes (a dried out mascara in december’s, this month I got the awesome eyeshadow quad but one broke all over!) but Birchbox has awesome customer service-I got 100 points for the mascara and they’re sending me a second box this month! (the eyeshadow isn’t super useable-the broken one was a charcoal-y black and it is hard to get it off of the other colors to use them, and it got a little onto the underarmor headband, but I still got 100% usable cleanser with a fancy cloth, body butter, and a hair treatment! and only one spot on the headband got badly marked up, so if that’s on the bottom I’m fine!)

    1. Jennifer

They do have great service! 100 points is basically the cost of the box plus you’ll still get to review your things!!

  4. Kayla

I just resubscribed, I hope I get the same as yours!

    1. Jennifer

Fingers crossed for a great box!

  5. Sylvia

Wow, I never knew about the box variations! I always assumed the items were sort of randomly placed and sent out. Makes a lot more sense now that you’ve explained how it works — thanks!! I still haven’t received my January box (sigh), but I think they were all probably delayed because of the crazy weather.

    1. Jennifer

Has it shipped yet? I hope you get it soon!!

      1. Sylvia

FINALLY got my Birchbox yesterday! I got box 1 (bb1). Mine had a deluxe sample sized Fekkai Glossing shampoo and a conditioner, an Inika eyeshadow, a full-sized Nail Rock polish, and a pack of deodorant wipes. I love the polish, but I was hoping for your Whish body butter, too!

        1. Jennifer

It’ll probably eventually appear in a box! It sounds like you got a great one though!

  6. Tracy

I got #24 this month which did include the tea. I like tea well enough. I’ve been more about coffee lately. I was excited about the box before it arrived. Once I got it, a couple things weren’t as wow as I hoped. I still use them just not all the time.

    1. Jennifer

I would love to see how birchbox selects what goes in each persons boxes based on their profile! And also how I can opt out of tea. Lol.

  7. Erin

The Welcome Box arrived on Jan. 2, welcoming me to Birch Box with a note saying my first box should be arriving soon. My message on Birch Box says my box will be shipping out soon, but while I am waiting check out what’s being offered in January. I guess I just have to wait.

    1. Jennifer

Let me know when it ships. I’m curious!

      1. Erin

I spoke with them today. My welcome box was my January box which included A full size Ghirardelli toffee crunch bar, bene tint, Beauty protector shampoo and conditioner, and Ruby Wing coloring changing polish.

        1. Erin

nothing like the stuff you are all taking about.

        2. Jennifer

That actually sounds like a good box! But your box will be “normal” and matched to your profile in February. I think they always do a welcome box for your first box.

  8. Ashley

I got box #41. Tea, Mascara, Juicy perfume sample, shampoo and a face cleanser. However, my box arrived late as well. Somehow the zip code next to the barcode on the shipping label wasn’t mine, so they were trying to deliver it to a different area of town and it took them an addition 3 days to sort it out and get it to me. (Someone finally looked at the zip code on the address)

My sister got box #57. Nail Rock, mascara, juicy perfume, glossing creme and burts bees lotion.

    1. Jennifer

I should have looked at my address!! And I am jealous of your sisters nail rock! Because that’s what I need – more nail stuff :).

  9. Bryna

I just signed up for Birchbox on January 9th and was able to join on January 16th, so the wait list took about a week for me.

    1. Jennifer

      Awesome thank you!!

  10. I got box #2 and thought it was great, it was 100% different than yours. Read about it here: whattheschneck.blogspot.com/2014/01/birchbox-time-review-january-2014.html?m=1

    1. Jennifer

      Thanks! I will go look!

  11. Melissa M

Klorane Dry Shampoo is my HG dry shampoo! I LOVE it!! They just added one to the BB store its dry shampoo with nettles? IDK what that means but of course I need it haha

    1. Jennifer

      Try it and report back!

  12. Rita Morgan

Not happy the Post Office has my box since the 11th. I contacted Birchbox they’ll send me another box , most likely with different products. In my original box I would have received Juicy Coutour Parfume, mascara , teas , Kloraine Shampoo and Liz Earle Cleanser. Now my mystery box hopefully on the way and this time I’ll receive it!

    1. Jennifer

I wonder what happened to your box?? I bet it ends up appearing eventually. I hope so because I love that Liz Earle!

  13. Cristina

I got the exact same box as you did! Excited to try the Super Booster too. I have never tried a dry shampoo but I’m pretty happy I got this one to try it – especially with your good review on it!
I’m not a huge fan of getting tea either 🙁 I do like tea, but when I want tea I prefer to just drink teas I know I enjoy. You should pack up a bunch of tea and put it up for a giveaway! I would be all over that for sure!

    1. Jennifer

I’ve been give them all to my cousin who is trying to stop coffee. I need to see how her collection is. Let me know what you think of the shampoo!

  14. Kristin

My box has been taking a tour of the country. It arrived at the post office here in TN on the 13th. I was getting mad everyday they didn’t deliver it. On the 18th, it is suddenly in Spokane, WA. What? How did it suddenly get across the country? The post office said oops and that was it basically. I am anxiously awaiting my box still.

    1. Jennifer

      LOL! Oops is right!

  15. Paige

Hi! I love your blog! How do you find out the contents of your birchbox before it comes? Thanks!

    1. Jennifer

Just to go Birchbox, click on Boxes and then Woman’s Box. The boxes update on the 10th of the month! Men’s are on the 25th I believe?

  16. Shannon

I really enjoy your blog. This was my first month I got a Birchbox and I was very pleased with it. My box this month had Gilchrist & Soames shampoo & conditioner (smells great), Burt?s Bees Intense Hydration Day Lotion with Clary Sage, Paula?s Choice RESIST C15 Super Booster and Coastal ScentsRevealed Palette Set.
My eyeshadow came and it was all broken up to the point that I could use it. I decided to email Birchbox and within four minutes they replied and said the would send me out a new one. Now that’s customer service!

    1. Jennifer

      That is amazing customer service!

  17. Hannah

I only waited 4 days to receive my BirchBox subscription! I was very pleased & I just got an email saying my first box has shipped! 6 days total from deciding on getting BirchBox to having my box shipped!
This blog is great 🙂 I’ve heard mixed reviews on BB, but this blog makes me even more excited, especially since it seems that BB has great customer service.
Can’t wait to see what everyone, including myself, get in their February boxes!
