January 2014 Escape Monthly

Once again, it was another great mail day around here! My January 2014 Escape Monthly was one of the boxes that arrived and was the one I opened first. They were on Plum District earlier this month for 50% off and I couldn’t resist that sale, so I signed up for a box!

If you aren’t familiar with them, Escape Monthly is a monthly vacation in a box. Each month you will discover products from a different location. Products consist off local and destination-inspired foods, relaxation and beauty essentials, and the highest quality products that bring the life of the destination right to you

The Box

Escape Monthly ships via USPS Priority Mail. I received a shipping notification on the 17th and it arrived today. We with the weekend and the holiday, that’s about right.

First Look

The Escape Monthly packaging alone has always made me want to subscribe.  The chevron, the colors. It’s so me!

Second First Look

Lots of food in the first look, but nothing I recognized, so that was good!  This month’s was super heavy and I was actually surprised there weren’t more packaging materials in there.  Luckily nothing broke, so that was good!

The Information Card

The January 2014 Escape Monthly destination was “Colorado” and included things that make Colorado wonderful, including delicious snacks and treats to wildcrafted beauty products for pampering yourself in the rustic-luxe way that defines Colorado.  Here is what was inside:

~Moon Colorado Handbook ($19.99): I have never been to Colorado (but I hear it’s beautiful), so I am planning on browsing through this book to see what I am missing!  If I am not mistaken, every Escape Monthly comes with a Moon book (I could be totally wrong though), so you could end up with a nice collection of these.

~Bluecorn Naturals Beeswax Candles ($4.99): I love candles, but I’m not sure I love the smell.  It’s scented with honey and colored by pollen, which I think is super cool in theory, I’m not sure it’s for me.

~Bobo’s Gluten-Free Peach Oat Bars ($3.95):  I’m not overly fond of peach flavored things, so I think this is going to be a B item.  He will appreciate it much more than I would.

~Chocolove Orange Peel Chocolate Bar ($2.99):  Yum!  Totally delicious.  I don’t know how to best describe it, but it’s got a bit of a crisp to it which I like.  It’s not just a flat chocolate bar.  It’s better.

~Colorado Aromatics Mountain Mist Lotion ($5.20):  This smells very spa like.  If I close my eyes tight enough, maybe, just maybe I can imagine being at a spa in CO.  That sounds quite nice right now.

~Jackson’s Honest Potato Chips ($2.99):  This would be another B type item!  He’s been packing his lunches for work and school and can always use a new snack or two.  This company uses coconut oil to fry their chips which makes them unlike any other chips out there!

~Not The Same Rocky Mountain Mud Bath ($7.25):  Oddly enough, B and I were just talking about mud masks and mud baths.  I have no idea why but I totally cracked up when I saw this.  I really want to try this and think it’s going to happen this weekend.  For some reason this is far more exciting to me than a regular bath.

~White Girl Salsa ($7.99):  Seeing as how I only like mild salsa, this probably isn’t for me.  I am going to pass it along to my mom, who is going to LOVE trying it!

~Geodes from Pikes Peak Rocks ($1.99): I have never received a rock in a subscription box before, so this is a first!  It left, well, rock dust over everything so I think that wrapping this may be the way to go.  Anyway.  When L and B get home today, we are going to break into this thing and see how pretty it looks inside.  I think L is going to be shocked!

ETA: We opened the geode!  I am so glad I did not attempt this on my own because it was a battle to crack that thing open.  Safety glasses probably should have been used.  And, umm, we probably would have done it outside.  But B got it.  I think we were both expecting it to be colorful inside, but it was just white/grey’ish crystals.  L thought it was super amazing and thinks we found some secret rock.  LOL!

All totaled I came up with a value of $57.34 for the January 2014 Escape Monthly Colorado box.  I paid $25 for the box through the Plum District deal (which is now over) and am more than happy with what I received, but I don’t know if I would pay the $49.95 monthly cost.  It might be one I’d do here and there with a coupon when they did a fun location I was interested in (like Paris or Japan or something).

I have to admit – I stopped reading your blog months ago simply because all of the reviews aren’t my thing. I decided to check back in today and see if anything has changed. Your house must be overflowing with all of this stuff now, no?! Haha!
Glad to see you’re still around and I hope your sweet little guys are well!

    1. Jennifer

They are! Thanks for stopping by again!!

And I am trying to get better about using / donating / gifting everything! No one comes over without leaving with something ;).

Would totally love to indulge in this lovely monthly box- but it’s a little pricey for my taste. I will just live vicariously through you LOL

    1. Jennifer

I wouldn’t mind it monthly either. If I could get it for 50% every month, I’d do it!

  4. Chelsea

I too am putting in a request for geode photos.

    1. Jennifer

      I just updated!

I received mine today as well and unfortunately the salsa wasn’t sealed so everything in the box has a slimy coating 🙁 Not such a pleasant escape.

    1. Jennifer

That’s not a vacation in a box at all. I hope they fix it for you.

White girl salsa… SO good. Am assuming it has some connection to CO.? Who knew… and I’ve lived in CO for 12 years.

    1. Jennifer

That happens to me with Michigan stuff too! I’m like why didn’t I know that?

  7. Kirstin

I’m from Colorado Springs, now living in Arkansas. It is definitely a state worth visiting

    1. Jennifer

      I really want to go!

  8. MJ

I really enjoyed this box! The scent of the candle was definitely a little overpowering but I’ll give it a try! I really want to try the mud bath. Seems like a nice relaxer after a hard day.
I think I might keep up with this box. At least for 1-2 more months. NYC is next!

    1. Jennifer

Ohhhh, I didn’t know that NYC was next! I’d love to see what they do for that.

I just got my box. Unfortunately the geode tumbled through everything. All the packaging was ripped up and damaged. The candle was bent up and I haven’t been able to get it open. The chips were dust. I’m not up for eating food items covered in a thick layer of dirt. No idea how the salsa jar didn’t bust ( glass jar packed with a big rock neither wrapped) but the lid was all dented and scratched up. Even the book cover looks like it was sanded down. I requested a replacement box without the geode. The box wasn’t very full so the items were not tight and tumbled around. I hope they do better next time. I’m seriously considering unsubscribing. I can’t even give away the things I dont want cause they look so damaged it’s a bit embarrassing…. only offering to closest friends.

    1. Jennifer

Ugh. That is awful. They really should have put that rock in something. And then bubble wrapped it!!! And I am with you in the salsa. I was shocked it didn’t break.

  10. Mwah

I received the box, but it had been wrapped in cellophane (by the post office) because the salsa jar broke, which got the box all soggy, which basically made the whole box collapse into a mushed pile of mess! Yes, the packaging left much to be desired, but I am very pleased with their customer service. I was given two options, either receive the same box again or be credited an additional month, plus 10% off the next month. This is the first damaged box I have received, so I don’t believe they make a habit of skipping the bubble wrap step of the packaging! A bad experience made right through good customer service!

    1. Jennifer

THat is good to hear!! Not good about it being broken, but good to hear how they fixed it!

  11. Rebecca

Hey everyone! If anyone who has experienced a messy box hasn’t been helped yet, please email us at support@escapemonthly.com and we would be happy to fix our error. We’re so sorry for the crummy experience!
