Hamptons Lane, who kindly sent me this box to review, curates an amazing monthly box of artisan foods, kitchen tools, and serveware for the food lover. Boxes are $45/month and will be revealed at the beginning of every month. Boxes are created around a monthly theme, such as Southwestern Fiesta, The Best of BBQ, Picnic Time, etc. Unlike most subscription boxes, you can skip the box if it doesn’t interest you during the first five days of that month.
Hamptons Lane is launching their first box in April (you can sign up now, but you won’t be billed until it ships), but I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the box sent to me to review!
My Hamptons Lane box shipped via FedEx. Since the box is brand new and I hadn’t checked the website, I had no idea what to expect. All I knew was that the box weighed 11 pounds, which seemed like a lot!
I still had no idea what to expect and I was getting even more curious when I opened it up. The first month of a brand new box is always extra exciting!
I opened the blue Hamptons Lane box first and after looking at the contents I realized it was a fiesta themed box which I thought was awesome. But what was in that big box? I thought I had an idea, but still wasn’t 100% sure.
The April 2014 Hamptons Lane theme is “Southwestern Fiesta” and includes culinary delights found deep in the heart of Texas which were curated for your next taco night. I quickly glanced at the information sheet (it folds open and gives information on each of the included products inside and also gives recipes for guacamole and margaritas) and then moved on to the contents of the box. Here is what was inside:
~Authentic Lava Rock Molcajete (~$40): Even after looking at the information card, I still didn’t know what was in that big heavy brown box. You know what I thought it was? One of those big buckets of margarita mix that you freeze and add booze to. Which makes no sense at all considering the high quality nature of the other items in there, but that’s what I was thinking. Well it turns out I was way wrong. It was a “lava rock molcajete”. Or more specifically, that thing you make guacamole in. It’s hand carved and is SO cool. When B came home last night he was even excited about it and was plotting a summer of tacos and guacamole. I cannot wait for that. You do need to cure your molcajete before using it, but the card gives you step-by-step instructions that I am certain B can handle.
~Melissa Guerra Fajita Seasoning ($~5): This fajita seasoning comes from the South Texas Spice Company and it’s said that you have never tried fajitas until you’ve tried them with this. I swear as soon as the weather is nice enough to eat outside, we are making these. I am ready for summer and patio dinners and all that fun stuff!
~Melissa Guerra Taco Seasoning (~$7.50): This seasoning was created just for Hamptons Lane by culinary expert Melissa Guerra. Since it was created just for this box I couldn’t find a price for it online, so I estimated. It’s probably a low estimate, but I like to be conservative.
~Salt Traders Margarita Salt with Chipotle Chiles ($12): This salt was created to be course enough to deliver a crunch, but also still be able to dissolve on the palate. I am not a huge fan of the salt rimmed glass (I do like a sugar rimmed glass though), but I will be happy to try it. If B makes it, 99% of the time I try it!
~Lime Juicer from Norpro ($9): Of all the kitchen gadgets we own (and we own a lot), one of them is not a lime juicer. Now we will have no reason not to be able to make our own guacamole and add fresh lime juice to recipes (drink or otherwise).
~La Fogata Salsa ($10): I fear this salsa a little bit. It has a picture of a fire on it which makes me think it’s, well, hot, but based on the information card it doesn’t appear to be anything over the top spicy. I wanted to open this and test it, but I restrained myself since I really really want to save all this for the first night on the patio this spring / summer.
All totaled (using my best estimates) I came up with a value of $83.50 for the April 2014 Hamptons Lane box. I am guessing my estimates are a little on the low end, but even so it’s a great value since the box is only $47/month. I thought this box was fabulous and I love that you get to see exactly what’s going to be in the box every month before you commit to buying it. I am thinking this is going to become one of my regular subscriptions and I think B agrees.
