Kiwi Crate - City Adventure
March 2014 Kiwi Crate – City Adventure

Our March 2014 Kiwi Crate arrived on Saturday and L and I took some time yesterday (seriously yesterday was a fun day) to work on it!

If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crates are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L is 5 and is getting to the point where he can be more in charge of the project and is able to follow along on the instructions better and better each month.  For some of them he doesn’t even need me!

The Box

Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and takes about a week to arrive.  Smart Post always seems to take a week to get to me, no matter what box it is or where it ships from!

The Theme

My March 2014 Kiwi Crate theme was “City Adventure” and included two projects – “my skyscraper” and “my taxi cab”.  Kiwi Crate now sends a variety of different crates to subscribers (as many as eight different crates are circulating each month per Kiwi Crate) so you may or may not have received the same crate I did this month.  Some subscribers will receive City Adventures crate this month, while others will receive a crate sent out in a previous month. I have subscribed for almost two years so I always get the “new” crate because I have already received most all of their other ones.

Project #1: My Skyscraper

Project #1 – My Skyscraper
My Skyscraper – The Materials

The first project we worked on was “my skyscraper” and included everything you needed to make your own skyscraper or city block.  It was low on the messiness scale, low on the grownup involvement scale and involved discovering, moving – fine and creating.

L picked this one to work on first.  He built the entire city block by himself while I worked on coloring some of the backgrounds.  When he was done building, he drew the pictures in the storefronts.  He so loved building this and I need to get him some of those K’Nex blocks or something so he can build like crazy!

Project #2 – My Taxi Cab

The second project was “my taxi cab” and included everything you needed to build a car and roll it around the city streets.  It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved exploring, creating and moving – fine.

My Taxi Cab – All Done

I was surprised at how easy this one was!  I think it took L and I maybe 5 minutes to finish?  It’s surprisingly cute and sturdy and yes, this project included washi tape!  I think one day this week I might make some washi roads on the kitchen floor for the boys to drive their cars and trains on.  It’ll be a huge hit and I owe Kiwi Crate big for thinking of it.

explore! Magazine

This month’s explore! magazine included a story, a few drawing projects and various craft ideas.  They have a super cute idea to build with toothpicks and mini marshmallows.  Now that is a great idea.  I am so excited about doing this with L.  We don’t have any mini marshmallows or we would have done this yesterday!

Did you get Kiwi Crate this month?  What’d you think?  Which box did you get this month?   If you are interested in subscribing, head to the Kiwi Crate website to order your crate.  And don’t forget to use the coupon code “LUCKY” to save 30% off your first box!  This code expires today (3/17) though, so act quickly!
