March 2014 Mantry Review
March 2014 Mantry Review

There has been a little lull in subscription box activity these past few days, but one box (and that would be the only box) I received today was B’s March 2014 Mantry.

Mantry, If you aren’t familiar, is the Modern Man’s Pantry. It’s a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them.  At $75/month it’s a spendy box for sure, but B totally loves it.

The Box

Mantry ships via UPS Smart Post.  It starts out as UPS and then typically ends up being delivered by the Post Office.  Last month UPS actually delivered it, but this month the post office did and it took about 4 days to arrive.

The Crate

B is still saving every single one of his Mantry crates.  The idea (in his head) is to make a bar out of all the old crates, but I don’t know that he actually has any idea how many crates he needs for this or how it’s going to happen.  I will keep you posted on that.

The Information Card

The March 2014 Mantry theme was “Health Nut” and included six products rounded up by Mantry to inch you one step closer to being superhuman(er).  Here is what was inside:

~Jonty Jacobs Biltong ($9.99):  A bag of shredded meat?  B will love this and it will be gone within minutes of opening them I am sure.  And in case you are wondering (I know I was), Biltong was developed in South Africa to preserve meat without refrigeration.  I think though, once it’s opened it needs to go in the fridge.

~TruBee Honey Tennessee Snow Honey ($10): I have tried TruBee Honey before (it’s good), but never snow honey.  Once the honey has been crystalized, they whip it until it’s smooth and spreadable and almost white in color.  I had no idea this was even possible and I think it makes me like it even more.  Much neater than regular honey.  Oh and did you know that honey helps with hangovers?  That’s what Mantry says.  I will be sure to recommend this to B next time he ties one on.  Or not ;).

~Natural Delights Medjool Dates ($6.99):  Hmm, the odds of me or B eating these plain is pretty slim, but Mantry suggests making a “date shake” with almond milk, bananas and the pistachio butter we also received this month.  I never would have thought of such a creation, but why not try it?   I mean they are here.

Natural Delights Medjool Dates

~Peguero Farms Roasted Sea Salted Pistachio Butter ($14.99):  Mmm, this is yummy!  It made from 100% California pistachios and in addition to getting put in date shakes could work on toast, english muffins or on a PB&J!

~Vogses Chocolates Coconut Ash & Banana Super Dark ($7.50): I don’t love coconut, but I do love chocolate so I will make an exception.  I knew dark chocolate had health benefits, but I was not aware that one of those benefits was stress reduction.  Clearly I had the right idea all along when I would eat chocolate while stressed. It really does work!

Vogses Chocolates Coconut Ash & Banana Super Dark

~Quinn Popcorn Lemon & Sea Salt Popcorn ($5): We have tried a few of the flavors of Quinn popcorn, but I don’t think the lemon and sea salt was one of them.  B will probably take one to work for a little afternoon treat and we’ll save the other one for a movie night at home!

All totaled I came up with a value of $54.46 for the March 2014 Mantry – “Health Nut” edition.  This month was a mixed bag.  The meat and pistachio butter were a hit, but I still don’t quite know about those dates!!
