Doodle Crate is one of the new(er) lines in the Kiwi Crate family. Designed for girls ages 9-16, Doodle Crate includes all the materials and inspiration for DIY projects such as patterned pouches, friendship bracelets, or colorful candles. Crates encourage girls to tackle new challenges and gain creative confidence! This box, which I received for review, is their special Halloween Candle Making crate (#HalloweenwithDoodle). I had missed their original candle making subscription box so I was thrilled to get my hands on this one!
Doodle Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and, in general, takes a week to get across the country to me.
Sometimes I will put craft boxes to the side to work on when I up for a challenge, but I find Doodle Crate to be more enjoyable than challenging. It’s aimed at girls 9-16+, but I love it for myself. I usually find the crafts relaxing and like that you don’t need any real crafting skills to complete them.
The Kiwi Crate shop features a variety of different holiday crates right now, but as I mentioned, I opted to review the Doodle Crate Halloween Crate. Here is what was included:
The Materials
The box included wax, three glass votive candle holders, crayons, stirring sticks, paper cups, wicks, a clear plastic candle “mold” and a black marker pen.
Step #1 – Make Your Candles
The first step is to melt your candle wax. In order to color your wax you dice up the crayons and add them to the wax before you melt it. The more crayon pieces you add, the deeper the color of the wax will be. Then you simply pop it into the microwave (I did it for about a minute and a half) in the paper cup, take it out and stir.
The instructions tell you to use the candle mold (the plastic shot glass sized cup) to make all of your candles in, but I felt like that was going to take forever. They only give you one “mold” and when you want to make layered candles where you need to wait 30 minutes between pouring layers, well that would take hours and hours. So I decided to put the wax directly in the glass votives. To get the wick to stick you pour a bit of wax in the bottom and then place the wick on top of it. After it’s set (it doesn’t take long), just pour the rest of your heated wax in the container.
Some of my wicks didn’t stay perfectly in place (I probably didn’t wait long enough) so I used the wooden stir sticks to hold them in place. Worked perfect.
I waited about 20-30 minutes in between layers on mine. I probably should have waited a little longer on my top white layer because some of the orange kind of floated up to the top. It was really easy to do though and I had no issues with getting the wax melted or getting good colors with the crayons. Everything worked out quite well.
Step #2 – Decorate Your Votive
I kind of thought it would be more difficult to get the pen to write on the glass, but clearly Doodle Crate knew what they were doing and included the perfect pen for it. I actually had to redo one of mine and found that a little water, paper towel and a good amount rubbing will get the pen off. It doesn’t budge or smear when you pick them up or anything though.
Overall I loved this crate, but I do wish they would have included three votive candle molds instead of just the one. It would have made the project much more simple to complete. But I love the way it turned out and I would for sure recommend this crate!
