The minute I saw this one I was excited.  It was exactly the type of project I felt like doing yesterday afternoon!

Doodle Crate May 2016 Subscription Box Review + 50% Off Coupon CodeThe May 2016 Doodle Crate project was “Make Your Own Stained Glass Catcher” and explored the “Translucent Painting” technique.

Step #1 – Tracing:  The first step was to select the template(s) you wanted to use (you could also opt to design your own) and then to trace the picture onto your plastic circle.  I opted for the fish / scales template and decided to do all three of my pieces in this design.  The tracing was super easy.  The box included a thick black paint pen that was really easy to work with.  It dried quickly so as soon as I finished up tracing all of my pictures I was able to move on to Step #2.

~Step #2 – Adding Color: I should have taken some pictures while I was “adding color”, but I was so into it that I forgot. The box included a mini scooper that you dipped into the paint color of your choice and then poured onto your designed.  The paint could be spread out with the back side of the mini scooper. I didn’t find this to be the easiest tool to work with and would have been happier with a plain old paint brush.  It did work though.  The paint had the consistency of a gel and was sticky to the touch.  The box included six different colors, but I opted to use just the blue and the orange. And then left a few scales plain.  I may eventually go back and fill them in, but I was only feeling the blue and orange yesterday.

~Step #3 – Assembling Your Painted Suncatcher: The final step was to assemble your suncatcher.  The box included a jump rings and chains to hook the circles together and then a suction cup to attach them to the window.  It was an easy process, but make sure you wait until it’s fully dry before trying to attach.

I LOVED this project.  I am actually going to try to find the materials for it at Hobby Lobby so that the kids and I can do them together this summer.  So cool!

This looks like a perfect summer craft! Please do post if you have luck finding the supplies at Hobby Lobby. Just checked and this particular craft doesn’t seem to be offered as a one-time purchase box.
