Kiwi Crate boxes are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. It was one of the first boxes I ever subscribed to and we still love it.
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and generally takes about a week to arrive. All of my Kiwi Crate boxes (Kiwi Crate, Koala Crate and Doodle Crate) arrived together in one large box.
We received this crate back in April and I have no idea what took us so long to complete (well start) it.
The April 2016 Kiwi Crate theme was “Coral Reef” and included three projects: “Color Your Reef”, “Make Your Jellyfish” and “Race Your Jellyfish”.
Project #1 – Color Your Reef
The first project (well step) was to decorate our reef scenes with colorful patterns. This project was medium on the messiness scale and low on the grownup involvement scale.
I worked on these projects with my son who is 4. He’s a little on the young side for Kiwi Crate, but he didn’t have any problems with the coloring! There were, however, some issues with the smudger. He liked to dip it water and then smudge the pastels like crazy. So much so that the paper ended up flaking off in some spots. Oops! He loved it though.
Project #2 – Make Your Jellyfish
The next step was to create a couple of friendly Jellyfish to live in your reef. This project was medium on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.
I had to do most of this project (other than the coloring of the jellyfish tentacles), but W loved the result! It involved a lot of threading and stringing and he just wasn’t into that. He liked putting the googly eyes on though.
Project #3 – Race Your Jellyfish
The final step was to complete your coral reef and have a jeelyfish race. It was low on the messiness scale and high on the grownup involvement scale.
My 8 year-old *probably* could have done this on his own, but my 4 year-old? No way! Making the jellyfish go up and down involved quite a few steps and careful attention to detail. I didn’t take any pictures of the actual race (with the ratchet sticks), but W would like you to know he won ;).
