This old saying advises one to prefer substantial, practical items such as food over decorative, ephemeral items such as flowers. On a fun pop culture note, the name of the widely popular Japanese manga and TV series, Boys Over Flowers (花より男子, Hana Yori Dango) is actually a pun on this idiom since 団子 ( dango, food) and 男子 ( dango, boys) are homophones in Japanese.
