Mantry (aka the Modern Man’s Pantry) is a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them. It’s $75/month and has been around since the Fall of 2012. It’s one of the more expensive subscriptions we get, but B loves it!
Mantry ships via UPS Mail Innovations. It shipped on Monday and I received it today (on Wednesday). Mantry always ships on the 20th of the month and bills just a day or two before they ship.
Mantry packages all of their items inside of a Mantry branded wooden crate. I have always loved them but I think they are even better now that we have a use for them. B uses them to store glasses and drink mixes and that sort of thing on the shelves in our basement bar. They are totally perfect for it and look cool.
This month’s Mantry included the information booklet and a Curator’s Letter. I think March was the first month we’ve ever received a Curator’s Letter. It gave a little insight to the selections which I loved and I hope this is a new monthly feature.
The March 2015 Mantry theme was “Tennessee Roadtrip” and included the following items:
~Shotwell Candy Co. “Old Fashioned” Cocktail Caramels ($9.75): We have received Shotwell Caramels before, but never this flavor. I am a fan of these, but B wasn’t really. They aren’t your standard caramels – they are infused with bitters, orange peel and booze (hence the name cocktail caramels). I think it helps knowing that before you try them.
~JM Thomason Hot Chicken Rub ($8.99): Mantry has a suggested recipe for this on their website titled “Nashville Hot Chicken“. It looks delicious (like DELICIOUS) and hopefully I can handle the heat!
~Soberdough Brew Bread ($8.95): I know we’ve received Soberdough before, but I don’t think it was the Buffaloving’ Wing flavor? This bread is SUPER easy to make – you just add a bottle of beer to the mix and put it in the oven. There’s not a chance you could mess it up and you can use whatever beer you want. Mantry recommends an “snappy American IPA” for this one.
~Chattanooga Cookie Co. Tennessee Moonshine Cake ($8): Mantry describes this as a “dessert and nightcap” in one. It’s made with moonshine from Gatlinburg’s Ole Smoky distillery. B and I had the same idea about this one and dug into it right after dinner. It was awesome. Like a chocolate chip muffin. With moonshine.
~Blackberry Farm Smoked Onion Jam ($13): We really need to step up our jam game. We get a ton of it in subscription boxes and can’t use it fast enough! Mantry suggests using this on the ham in this box which I never would have thought of. B will try this on Sunday morning and and I am sure his instagram will have a picture.
~Father’s Country Ham Country Ham ($5.75): This is cured ham and needs to be cooked before eating. I’m not familiar with the curing process, but I find it fascinating you can send meat in a package like this and have it be fine.
All totaled I came up with a value of $54.44 for the March 2015 Mantry box. The value is less than the cost of the box (it usually is though), but we really liked this box. I was actually surprised when I did the math and figured out the price. I had expected it to be higher. This box had a ton of variety and we loved the theme of it.
