Koala Crate is from Kiwi Crate’s new line of crates and is designed for preschoolers ages 3-4. The box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as colors, transportation or safari. Crates are designed to give children exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun.
Koala Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took about a week to arrive.
We have been a little behind in doing our Kiwi Crate / Koala Crate projects, but when I opened this I knew it would be a fun one.
The April 2015 Koala Crate theme was “Garden” and included three projects “Funny Grass Head”, “Growing Plant” and “Garden Book”.
Project #1 – Funny Grass Head
Funny Grass Head included everything needed to make a funny face and materials to grow hair! It involved “discovering” and “creating” and was medium on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.
WB and I had a good time with this one. We were all fascinated with the soil pellets and loved watching them grow as we added water. I didn’t take an “after” picture because (obviously) nothing has grown yet. We just did this last night so it looks like dirt in a cup.
Project #2 – Growing Plant
The second project in the kit was “Growing Plants”. This project involved creating / decorating your own special plant. It involved “creating” and moving – fine”and was medium on the messiness scale and low on the grown-up involvement scale.
WB liked this project much more than I expected. He was all about putting the glue dots on the leaves so that we could glue the tissue paper “flowers” on them. And the leaves. Oh boy did he like putting on the leaves. His tree wouldn’t stand when he was done though so I had to do a little rebalancing for him.
Project #3 – Garden Book
The third (and final) project was Garden Book. This project let you play along as Kelian the Koala and friends grow a garden. It involved “communicating” and “discovering”. It was low on the messiness scale and high on the grownup involvement scale.
WB liked reading the book, but that’s all he really thought it was – me reading him a book. He likes turning the pages and pointing out animals and flowers, but he didn’t really want to discuss it.
Koala Crate also includes the imagine! magazine. “imagine!” includes stories, mazes and other fun activities relating to the theme. My favorites in these are always the Hidden Pictures. I love those!
