Koala Crate May 2015 Subscription Box Review

Koala Crate is from Kiwi Crate’s new line of crates and is designed for preschoolers ages 3-4.  The box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as colors, transportation or safari. Crates are designed to give children exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun.

The Box

Koala Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took about a week to arrive. This actually arrived last month (in May), but I am a little behind on my Kiwi Crate / Koala Crate reviews.

Second First Look

I didn’t know what any of the projects for this one were yet, but I knew I was going to like it!

The Information Card

The May 2015 Koala Crate theme was “Cityscapes” and included three projects “city building blocks”, “stencil drawstring bag” and “skyline paintings”.

Project #1 – City Building Blocks

City Building Blocks – The Instructions
City Building Blocks – The Materials

The first project we worked on was City Building Blocks. It was all about playing and creating with city-themed wooden building blocks.  It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “discovering” and “exploring”.

City Building Blocks – In Progress

The instructions said this was medium on the grownup involvement scale, but I WB and I both struggled to get a lot of the stickers off the sheet.  It was a battle and eventually I just set him up with the next project and continued this one on my own.

City Building Blocks – All Done

Although some of the stickers were a pain, they turned out fabulous and WB loves stacking them and knocking them down and stacking theme again.

Project #2 – Stencil Drawstring Bag

The second project we worked on was “Stencil Drawstring Bag”.  It included all the materials needed to create your own stencil design bag.  It was high on the messiness scale, medium on the grown-up involvement scale and involved “creating” and “moving – fine”.

Stencil Drawstring Bag – Getting Ready!
Serious Business

This guy was SO excited to paint and happily got right to work.  He’s a little (LOL) heavy handed with the paint, but who can blame him?  This was blue sparkly paint after all!  We (me) forgot to put the (included) wax paper inside the bag so the paint didn’t seep through, but oh well.  The other side isn’t too bad and it gives it some character.

Stencil Drawstring Bag – The Final Product

I can’t even tell what some of these shapes are, but I know WB loved it, so who cares! We currently have our blocks stored in here.

Project #3 – Skyline Paintings

The third project in the crate was “Skyline Paintings”.  The project used shape stickers to create unique city skylines.  It was high on the messiness scale, medium on the grown-up involvement scale and involved “creating” and “moving – fine”.

Skyline Paintings – In Progress

I think WB would be thrilled with an entire box full of painting projects.  He’s obsessed!

Skyline Paintings – The Final Product

I love how this one turned out and might even end up framing it!  The crate included some additional pieces of watercolor paper too so we can make more.

imagine!

Koala Crate also includes the imagine! magazine.  “imagine!” includes stories, mazes and other fun activities relating to the theme. I always try to throw it in my purse and have it handy for restaurants, car rides, etc.

What do you think of Koala Crate?  WB and I have been loving it and they come out up with fabulous themes!  If you are interested in subscribing you can sign up here and use the coupon code “SHARE10” to save $10 off your first box!
