I was super excited when I opened this box up and saw that it was painting themed!
Reading the instructions I thought, oh, okay, I can do this. Looking back, I wasn’t being very realistic. My painting skills are limited to walls and one Painting with a Twist class, but I still felt confident I could nail this. WRONG!
The August 2015 Smart Art Box included all of the supplies necessary to complete the van Gogh’ inspired painting including 4 oil based paint tubes (white, red, yellow and blue), a paintbrush, a paint knife, brush cleaner and a canvas. The information card breaks out the prices of these items and shows that the box has a value of $82.98. I didn’t price them out individually, but I thought everything was high-quality so I would agree with their prices.
The Project
Step one was to sketch the van Gogh’ inspired landscape. I thought this was easy enough and was sure I was off to a good start.
Step 2 – Step 6 is where it all went downhill. LOL! I had a really good time painting, but my painting exactly turn out like a van Gogh. Or even close. One of my main problems was that I used too much paint. WAY too much paint. So it was difficult to get paint to layer. The instructions said you’d probably need about a day for it to dry after you layer down the background (like you see above), but mine probably needed a week. LOL.
As you can see it’s not an amazing work of art, but I really did have a good time with it. I was telling B how much I liked painting and he just looked at me like, well, you aren’t very good at it ;). No matter, it was fun!
