Koala Crate is from Kiwi Crate’s new(ish) line of crates and is designed for preschoolers ages 3-4. The box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as colors, transportation or safari. Crates are designed to give children exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun.
Koala Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took about a week to arrive. Sometimes they ship mid-month and sometimes they ship closer to the end of the month.
WB and I were a little bored yesterday, so we actually did this box and the October Kiwi Crate box in the same day.
The October 2015 Koala Crate theme was “starry night” and included three projects “meteor toss”, “glowing moon” and “moon makers book”.
Project #1 – Meteor Toss
The first project we started on was “meteor toss” which included everything you needed to play a fun target game with a meteor you make yourself. The project was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “creating” and “moving – gross”.
This project was super easy to make – it seriously took us two seconds. And guess who nailed his shot on the first try? Yep. WB. The meteor turned out perfect, but the paper ring was super flimsy (I know, it’s paper, but still) and we had trouble getting it to stay together. Tape fixed it, but a thicker paper or cardboard would have been better.
Project #2 – Glowing Moon
Glowing Moon included all of the materials needed to make your very own moon to light up your might. It was high on the messiness scale, high on the grownup involvement scale and involved “moving – fine” and “creating”.
Well, let me tell you, glowing moon is where it was at. WB and I rolled out the clay together and then I wrapped it around the ornament. We made the craters and did the painting together. I was a little unsure about the glow in the dark paint, but I am happy to report that it worked. And we spent an insane amount of time yesterday afternoon walking in and out of the bathroom to see it glow. We just loved this one.
Project #3 – The Moon Makers
The third (and final) project in the crate was “moon makers book”. It was low on the messiness scale, high on the grownup involvement scale and involved “communicating” and “discovering”.
WB and I read this book (and painted the moon with the glow in the dark paint like the instructions said) and then (of course) went outside to look for the moon. It wasn’t out yet, but we had fun looking for it! I do wonder though why they put glow in the dark paint in the book. You can’t see it unless it’s dark and when it’s dark you can’t read the book?

Koala Crate also includes the imagine! magazine. “imagine!” includes stories, mazes and other fun activities relating to the theme. It’s a great addition to the crate and allows you to continue with the theme long after you have finished the projects.
