Culture Chest Review - November 2016

The November 2016 Culture Chest explored Native American Culture and included the following items:

~How the Stars Fell into the Sky: A Navajo Legend ($6.99):   I thought this was a great book and fit in very well with what my 3rd grader has been learning at school recently.  The illustrations were stunning!
From AmazonThis retelling of a Navajo folktale explains how First Woman tried to write the laws of the land using stars in the sky, only to be thwarted by the trickster Coyote.

~Thunder Boy Jr. ($12.68): This book is amazing!  It’s a sweet story between Big Thunder and his son, Thunder Boy Jr.   Except Thunder Boy Jr. wants his “own” name – one that more reflects him and what he’s done.  It’s a very sweet story and shares the bond that this father and son share. Note: Instead of an activity this month, Culture Chest upgraded this book to a hardcover.

From Amazon:
Thunder Boy Jr. is named after his dad, but he wants a name that’s all his own. Just because people call his dad Big Thunder doesn’t mean he wants to be Little Thunder. He wants a name that celebrates something cool he’s done, like Touch the Clouds, Not Afraid of Ten Thousand Teeth, or Full of Wonder.

But just when Thunder Boy Jr. thinks all hope is lost, he and his dad pick the perfect name…a name that is sure to light up the sky.

Using Amazon (not retail) prices the November 2016 Culture Chest had a value of just about $21.  That’s less than the cost of the box, but I wouldn’t have been introduced to these books without this box, so I thought it was worth it.
