Our last Door-to-Door Organics order came with a bunch of kale. B and I had no clue what to do with kale. I wanted to make sure it didn’t go bad before we used it, so I decided to make smoothies with it. Green monsters to be exact. I have made them before, but with spinach, not kale. And they were pretty good (although I could taste the spinach). L was super excited to help and picked all the other ingredients we used (strawberries, peaches, blueberries and blueberry yogurt). Although it looked so pretty all layered together like that, it wasn’t the most amazing smoothie ever. And it certainly wasn’t green. Although, since the kale I used wasn’t even green how could I expect the smoothie to be? Never mind that. L declared it to be yucky, but drank it anyways. I drank it too. 1/2 because it was cold and it was 95 degrees out and 1/2 because I wanted L to drink his, so I knew I had to drink mine too. Mine time I will throw the kale in the food processor first so that’s chopped nice and fine before I put it in the blender.
I have since read that kale can be added to stir fry, which seems like another good idea for us. I know for sure L won’t be down with eating it alone.
Have you ever made a green monster? What do you put in the mix? And what in the world do you do with kale?
I’ve never made them, but kale chips are supposed to be really good.
Chances of me making them are like none, but I might be able to talk B into it!
I love kale chips! They sell them at whole foods but I buy them from a lady who makes them at home. They are so yummy!
Really?? Kale chips?? I need to try these!
My parents make Green Monsters. I have no clue what they put in it besides the kale but it does not look appealing. You can see the kale and it looks like stringy seaweed or something. Yuck! I think over at Eat, Live, Run she has recipes with kale in them or she has a blog about it. Maybe there’s something over there that might be yummy. She never disappoints! 🙂
I have seen some of her green monsters. I just don’t how much kale I would need to put in to actually make it green. I shudder at the thought of all those greens in my drink! Baby steps!
I suggest you go to the frozen fruit section at like Walmart. I have gotten these neat little bags that have all the fruit and yogurt right in them. You just add apple juice and maybe ice. they are easy cheesy. Only problem is I think they are a little on the small side….but I guess that is an appropriate size healthy serving….whatever!
I like those bags (and L loves them even more) but I thought adding the leafy greens would make it healthier! LOL.
