L wanted to bake yesterday, so I thought we would give the red, white and blue cupcakes I saw on Pinterest a try. I don’t know why I need Pinterest to tell me it’d be cool to dye the batter red, white and blue, but I do. We just used a boxed cake mix (Pillsbury Funfetti Stars and Stripes Cake Mix and Frosting bought last year on clearance at Target if you must know) because listen, I have two kids and making cupcakes from scratch just isn’t happening!
I’ll spare you with details on how to make the batter because, well, L is 4 and barely needs my help, so there is no way you guys do ;). In one of my not so smart ideas, I put the batter into three squeeze bottles before I dyed it. Umm. Bad idea.
It turns out that cake batter is thick (who knew??) and doesn’t exactly shake well. Oops! So I used some skewers to stir it up which worked out okay. But we could have saved lots of time by separating the batter first and then putting it in the bottles. Next time.
W was very interesting in the baking and will soon be fighting with L to clean out the bowl!
I squeezed the batter from the bottles into the cupcake liners at the same time. I should have mixed this up a little bit so they weren’t so even. Next time I would probably be a little less careful and maybe swirl the batter around with a skewer or something to make it look more fun!
I slapped some canned frosting on these babies, rolled them in sprinkles (just turn them upside down in the sprinkles – way less mess) and called them done. The Pioneer Woman I am not! How exactly does she homeschool her kids, cook delicious meals and blog about it all?
B and L tested the cupcakes and declared them to be very tasty. And if you take huge bites, like B, you can see all the colors at one time!
What treats are you making for the Fourth? Any special plans?
