Kiwi Crate‘s October theme was “shadow and light” and featured two projects: “my shadow puppets” and “kaleidoscope”. L is really into shadows lately, so this month was a perfect fit!
The first project “my shadow puppets” gives you everything you need to create moving shadow puppets. This includes puppet sheets, brads, wooden sticks and a flashlight. You build the puppets and then use the included flashlight to put on a show. Yeah, it came with a flashlight. L is pretty much obsessed with flashlights and was beyond thrilled to see this in the box. My shadow puppets is low on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale. It involves discovering, creating and communicating. Of all the projects we are ever done, we have never ever made puppets. Isn’t that crazy?
The second project was “my kaleidoscope” and included everything you need to well, build your own kaleidoscope. This supplies included mirrored paper, a straw, a clear wheel, screws and sticker sheets. The project was low on the messiness scale and also medium on the grownup involvement scale. It involves discovering, creating and moving – fine. L and I started on this project, but haven’t finished yet. I’ve always loved kaleidoscopes and could watch the colors and patterns for hours. It’s very calming. Please tell me someone else feels this way?
And, as always, there is a booklet on more ways to experiment with this months theme “shadow and light”. I think my favorite idea is turning the Kiwi Crate box into a shadow puppet theater. I never throw away the boxes and always appreciate ideas for their use. And I use realized that the booklet on more ways to explore can be separated into individual cards to store and save. Genius.
If you don’t know, Kiwi Crate is $19.95/monthly and is geared towards kids ages 3-7. L and I love Kiwi Crate and now that the winter months are coming I think seeing that green crate in the mail is going to be even more exciting. Sometimes you (and your kids too), just need a little pick me up on those cold cold winter days where you are trapped in the house. This is it! If you want to sign up, click here and make it happen. The November theme is Carnegie Hall – Weill Music Institute (which I am hoping / guessing means musical instruments) and the December theme is Antarctic Adventure and includes “oodles of fun activities and experiments including Penguin Bowling, Aurora Postcards and Ice Experiments”. Oh, and I almost forgot, the box included a flier about Limited-Edition Holiday Crates (“Crafty Christmas”, “Gifts Made by Me” and “Handmade Hanukkah”). I actually think we are going to get the Crafty Christmas one. It looks beyond fun and includes a gingerbread house project and an ornament project! You can go to the Kiwi Crate website and click on “Shop” to check those out.
