November Kiwi Crate

This month, Kiwi Crate teamed up with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute on a “making music” themed box. We like all things loud, so this was great for us. The box included two projects “my xylophone” and “rhythm bells”.

First Look

And now, on to the details.

my rhythm bells

The first project was “my rhythm bells” and included everything you need to make one-of-a kind cuffs, including wood beads, bells, elastic and colored pencils. The project is low on the messiness scale and involves moving – gross, creating and moving fine. We started on it right away and quickly learned that coloring on wooden beads with colored pencils is not that easy for a 4-year old. So we used a combination of markers and then dyed some of the beads using food coloring (it was a suggestion in the Kiwi Crate instruction booklet). I think L’s hands are still blue from using all that food coloring. It was much more fun though than trying to hold onto the beads and color at the same time. I even used marker on mine because it was easier than colored pencils.

After we finished project #1, we got right into the next one.

my xylophone

The second project was “my xylophone” and included everything needed to create your own xylophone and tinker around with your own tunes.  This was low on the messiness scale and involved discovering, creating and communicating. I was really surprised, but L was super into this.  Like he thought that composing the “music” was like the coolest thing ever.  He took selecting the stickers for the music sheet so seriously.  And if he got one wrong or out of order when he was playing the song, he started all over. It was so fun to watch.

We totally loved this month’s Kiwi Crate and it made a boring Saturday morning much more fun.  I think I mentioned it before, but next months theme is Antarctic Adventure and includes “oodles of fun activities and experiments including Penguin Bowling, Aurora Postcards and Ice Experiments”.  Sounds fun right?

If you don’t know, Kiwi Crate is $19.95/monthly and is geared towards kids ages 3-7.  L and I have done most every project we have gotten in our crates so far and have always been entertained with them.  They also some Limited-Edition Holiday Crates (“Crafty Christmas”, “Gifts Made by Me” and “Handmade Hanukkah”).  You can go to the Kiwi Crate website to order your crate subscription or to check out the Limited Edition Boxes.  And if you still aren’t sure about it and want to check out more reviews (by me), click here and you can see all of the previous boxes we received.

Do you get Kiwi Crate?  What’d you think of this month’s box?
