Bug Out Box is a monthly subscription “that provides you with the tools you’ll need to survive the next catastrophe. Each box is filled with quality survival gear, handpicked by our trusted preppers, survivalists, and seasoned outdoorsmen”. When my brother-in-law heard about this box he was instantly into it and wanted to see what a box was like. So I reached out(*) to Bug Out Box and they were kind enough to allow me to review a box!
Bug Out Box comes in a plain white box with Bug Out Box printed on the side. Nothing fancy. But that’s the point of this box. You don’t need fancy. You need to survive!
I could barely see the first look because it was all in camo. HA! But seriously, not only does Bug Out Box include an information card, they also include notes about what to do with your products if you find yourself lost in a forest miles from civilization. The numbers on the notes match the item list. Great idea!
The Bug Out Box information card is very detailed, which I really liked because this isn’t a box where I would know what to do with everything you know? Here’s what was inside:
~Survivalists Pocket Saw($2): This was, by far, our favorite item in the box. We kinda looked at it like really? This is going to cut through a limb? So we tested it out. On a 2×6, not an actual limb silly. And in less than 2 minutes, B was through that board. Amazing! You need one of these. Seriously.
~Coghlan’s Emergency Stove ($7.62): I had no idea they made stoves so small! It’s very light and includes fuel tabs so you don’t even need anything else. You are totally good to cook that wild animal you just trapped! Or just heat up whatever you brought with you ;).
~Hand-pressing Flash Light ($3.91): Listen, I am no survivalist. Or even a camper, but I love this. It emits a bright and wide light that can be seen from miles away in the dark. And it doesn’t require batteries or a bulb. Heck this is a must have not just if you are stuck in the wilderness, but in your emergency kit at home as well!
~Emergency Zone Emergency Blanket ($4.25): Did you know hypothermia can claim a life in just hours? I had no idea. This blanket retains 80% of your radiant body heat. Certainly something you’ll want to have as you wait to be rescued.
~Nature Valley Sweet & Salty Nut Granola Bar ($0.77): You can use this as a great source of protein to fuel that hike out of BFE. OR as squirrel bait. I mean, you decide.
~BugX Wipes ($0.85): Oh man, I’d rather eat a squirrel than end up covered in bug bites in the wilderness. Seriously. Plus, as the card reminds us, bugs carry a lot of nasty diseases. No thank you!
~Mouse Trap with Scented Trip Pedal ($1): At first I was like oh of course, a mouse trap to get those nasty little rodents away from you. Ha. Wrong. This is to be used for trapping. Trapping food! Birds, squirrels, whatever is out there. Come on, you are a survivalist now!
~Emergency Water Supply ($0.49): This is your 100% last resort water. You are to exhaust ALL other options before cracking into this sucker. ALL other options. For example, did you know that your toilet tank contains a gallon of CLEAN drinking water? I certainly didn’t. Listen, you never know when you are going to need to know this kind of stuff.
~Coghlan’s Waterproof Matches ($0.70): The matches were missing from my box (**). At least I think so anyway. B was here when I unpacked the box and we were unloading groceries, so it’s 100% possible they got thrown away in the craziness. I don’t need to tell you why you’d never waterproof matches in the wild. Even I know!
All totaled, I came up with a value of $21.89 for the March Bug Out Box. Just over the $19.99/month (+ shipping) cost of the Bug Out Box, however, most of the prices online were in bulk (and didn’t include shipping) so obviously it’d be more to buy things individually and pay for shipping.

i need to get this box, i find it all so fascinating, i dont camp EVER but i feel like some of these things just might come in handy if there is a natural disaster etc…thanks for reviewing this box, i didnt even know it was out there till i saw this review!
I feel like my husband would love this box…but oh wait he probably already owns all this stuff and more that I don’t even want to know about. If you have watched Duck Dynasty you would think my Hubs is related to them.
My uncle needs this box. LOL He’s the guy who stock piles stuff for the end of the world. I see his next gift in my future. 🙂
What a great idea! My mom would love this! I get a flash light every Christmas. Every car has a seatbelt cutter / window breaker, along with a box with like flares, jumper cables, first aid kit, gloves. The first aid kit and jumper cables have come in handy a lot. Maybe I should keep an emergency box at home like the car? Mmmm I should research what should be in it. Certainly this box gives great ideas.
I love this box! Not because of the end of the world stuff, but because my boyfriend and I are huge outdoorsmen. I was unsure if this would be right for us because of the technical theme, but your review helped prove this would also be great for what we do! Thanks!
I like that you could use some of this stuff in an emergency kit at home. Its not all for surviving out in the wilderness or something like that. I will be interested to see what they have in upcoming boxes. This box is definitely something that the husband would enjoy every month
interesting… this would be perfect for the zombie apocalypse! 😉 Honestly, I have friends who are crazy into zombies… I might get them a box!
I was doubtful about this box when I started reading. But this box is surprisingly useful and entertaining, plus possibly life saving. I don’t camp but I live in a city at risk from natural disasters so it’s always a good idea to own these types of supplies.
Ha we were just talking about having a natural disaster/ apocalypse / zombie attack kit. This would be a great gift for dear H so he can start building his Kit. I am sure he was joking but how awesome is this.
