Plum District had a deal on The Happy Trunk a while back and since it was a good deal and I have never tried their boxes before, I thought I’d give it a go. In case you don’t know, The Happy Trunk brings a carefully curated box filled with engaging hands-on projects and activities for kids ages 3-11. All materials are included and sibling add-ons are available.
To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from The Happy Trunk. I’d never read any reviews on it and I had never seen any pictures of actual real life boxes, so I wasn’t sure if I’d get a bag or a box or what. I was pleasantly surprised that it arrived in a nice sized box and vis USPS. I was a tad worried that hadn’t received anything yet because I ordered on 3/13 and all of a sudden one day, it just showed up.
Like many of the kids activity subscription boxes, The Happy Trunk comes with a pair of scissors in your first box. Are all kids obsessed with scissors like L is? Every two seconds he’s like, just let me know if you need me to cut something. Umm, okay.
The April The Happy Trunk theme is “Our Amazing Earth” (pretty perfect since it is Earth Month) and includes 3 related projects:”Make Your Own Terrarium”, “Stained Glass Earth” and “Tissue Tie Dye Reusable Bag”.
~Make Your Own Terrarium: This project includes everything you need to make your own terrarium. A terrarium is a container designed to hold small plants and animals in controlled conditions. The ecosystem that you will make inside your container is very similar to that of the real world and will be a great learning tool for L! He’s totally going to love this and I cannot wait to watch him get all excited to see it grow!
~Stained Glass Earth Map: Honestly just looking at this picture is stressing me out. In order to keep my sanity, I think I am going to have to completely turn this project over to L. I would want mine to be perfect and I know it’s NOT going to work out like the picture. L however, will NOT care and will love the mess that this project is going to make!
~Tissue Tie Dye Reusable Bag: In this project, you cut the special tissue paper into any shapes you want and put them all over the bag. Then you use the dropper thing to drop water ALL over the tissue paper. Let it dry (over night), peel off the tissue and you’ve got a fun tie dye bag you can use to carry whatever you want in! How cool does this sound?
~Explore More: The explore more card includes a link to their website for more recycle and upcycle projects, as well as, some ideas on the back to save the planet (such as planting a tree, cleaning up a nearby park, etc.). They have been talking about cleaning up the earth at L’s school this week, so this will fit in perfect!
I gotta tell you, I am very impressed with The Happy Trunk! It’s $19.95/month and I L is going to love it. I love the idea of giving these boxes as birthday gifts for kids too. It’s the gift that keeps on giving for sure!
