April The Homegrown Collective

The Homegrown Collective was one of the many boxes I received during last week’s crazy week of boxes! In case you don’t know, The Homegrown Collective is an invitation to be a part of the growing overall collective of people who are looking to shift their lifestyle to a more local, self-sustaining, and eco-conscious way of living. Their monthly Greenbox includes seasonally appropriate, professionally curated products that deliver the satisfaction of living a more self-sufficient & sustainable lifestyle to your doorstep each month. I think everyone wants to try and be a little more green right? But sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.

The Box

The Homegrown Collective ships via USPS Priority Mail, which makes me love them even more. I never used to think too much about different shipping methods before these boxes, but I have quickly learned that Priority Mail is the best!

I hadn’t opened the box by the time B got home from school the day it arrived and he immediately started asking me what was it in. I knew in advance what it was (you can get sneak peek’s on their Pinterest page), so I was just waiting for some better light to open it and take pictures. But no, once I told B what was in it, he insisted that we open it at once, so he could check it out.  So we did!  As you can see, The Homegrown Collective uses A LOT of packaging materials.  However, they also ship glass, so it makes sense!

The Homegrown Collective
The Information Cards

This month’s Homegrown Collective theme was “Olives and Herbs and Candles Oh My!!” and included everything you need to start your own herb garden, make an olive oil lamp and make herb & pepper infused olive oil.  Here are the details:

Herb Garden:

Herb Garden

The first project includes everything you need for your herb garden starter kit. We are growing thyme, basil and parsley (two pods of each) and the kit even includes markers so you know what you are growing!  Once your carton is “done” (you’ll be able to tell when seedlings emerge and one set of leaves have developed), you can transplant them in your garden or plant them in a pot.  The instruction card is obviously more detailed than I am, but you get the idea.  B cannot wait to start these.  Cannot wait.  Seriously.  He’s so been wanting to start an herb garden and it’s about to happen!

Olive Oil Lamp:

Olive Oil Lamp

The second project is an olive oil lamp.  I had NO idea it was as simple as pouring olive oil in a mason jar, adding a wick and you are done.  You can even add some dried herbs or great some cinnamon into the oil to get a little scent from it.  How cool is this?  Seriously.  I am going to use this on our patio (placed on a piece of wood as recommended) and will probably have the coolest candle ever.

Infused Olive Oil:

Infused Olive Oil

The final project includes everything you need to make your own infused oil olive.  The Homegrown Collective suggests using the first bottle with the dried herbs and chilli peppers they included in the package.  And then for the second bottle, they suggest getting creative!  However, they do caution NOT to use anything which would contain ANY traces of water or moisture in your olive oil as that would support bacteria growth, which we do NOT want!  I can’t wait to experiment! I am no longer scared of using olive oil to cook (well to eat), and making our own sounds so cool!

I didn’t do a value calculation for the April Homegrown Collective box since it would have been too difficult.  However, I do think it was totally worth the $48/month ($39 + $9 shipping) price tag.  And, of course, the box is even cheaper if you buy a 6-month ($39/month) or 12-month ($35.75/month) subscription!  If you are interested in subscribing, or just want to learn more, click here.  And don’t forget to use the code “RAMBLIN10” to save $10 off your first box!!!

Oh and did you think I was done?  Nope!  The Homegrown Collective wants to give you, yes you, a chance to win one of their cool Herb Kits!  Just follow the directions in Rafflecopter below and I’ll pick 3, yes 3, winners next Monday!  Good luck!!!!

I am none of the above. I live in an apartment with no yard & don’t know anything about gardening. I do, on the other hand, go pick squash & cucumbers out of my father’s garden every year. I want to learn & grow!!
