Kiwi Crate
May Kiwi Crate

The May Kiwi Crate theme is “feathered friends” and included two projects “my bird costume” and “my nest and eggs”.  I’m not going to lie, birds creep me out (*), but I am okay with fake ones, so this should be fine.

The Box

Kiwi Crate was one of the many boxes I received when I out of town.  And happily, it’s one of last reviews I need to get finished up.  Almost there people, almost there!

First Look

I mentioned it last month, but Kiwi Crate is doing things a little differently now.  Instead of the box being wrapped in tissue paper with a sticker label on the lid, Kiwi Crate now has a card that flips over with a coloring page on it. You can cut out the little guys and use them to play!  I took better pictures last month, so I will direct you there if you want to check it out.

Project #1: My Bird Costume

Project #1: My Bird Costume
My Bird Costume: The Supplies

The first May Kiwi Crate project was “my bird costume” and includes everything you need to create your own feathered mask and fabric wings.  This project is low on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.  It involves discovering, creating and moving – gross.  L’s totally down to make the mask (I mean it’s a MASK), but the wings, he’s not that into.  Luckily we have WB who will happily wear the wings.  Okay, maybe not happily, but he’ll do it.  I will totally post a picture after we finish this one because I think it’s going to be too funny not too!!  I would have waited until we finished this before I did this post, but at the pace I am going here, we could have the June crate by then.  But I promise I will post one to Instagram!!

Project #2: my nest and eggs

Project #2: my nest and eggs
my nest and eggs – the supplies

The second May Kiwi Crate product is “my nest and eggs” and includes everything you need to build your own bird’s nest.  Once you are done, you can decorate your eggs and pretend a baby bird is hatching.  This project is high on the messiness scale (woot woot!) and medium on the grownup involvement scale.  It involves caring, creating and moving – fun.  We LOVE finding bird’s nests around here, so I think making one of our own is going to be fun.  And it’s a great chance to talk more about nests and how we should NOT bother them when we do find them. That’s hard for a 5 year-old boy.  And a crazy dog.  Especially when the nest is on the ground.  So hard for those boys not to touch it.

feathered friends – explore more

feathered friends – explore more

This month’s explore more gives us a chance to learn about a few different kinds of birds including the goose, kiwi, hummingbird and bald eagles.  There are a few eagles on the lake we go to up-north and it’s always such a big deal when we see them.  Their nest?  OMG.  It’s huge!!

Future Crates

The May Kiwi Crate also came with a fold-out “Camp Kiwi” flyer that shows all the future crates for the summer.  June’s theme is “Nature Explorers” and includes the following projects “Night Sky Lantern”, “Nature Collection Box” and “Constellation Cards” and will also include a special deck of playing cards!  July’s theme is “Wonders of Water” and includes “Floating Sailboat”, “Watercolor Animals” and “Water Experiments”.  And finally August’s theme is “Fun with Flight” and includes “Rad Rockets”, “Kite Making Kit” and “Make Your Own Flyers”!  I can’t wait!!!

If you don’t already know, Kiwi Crate is $19.95/monthly and is geared towards kids ages 3-7.  L and I have done most every project we have gotten in our crates so far and have always been entertained with them. You can go to the Kiwi Crate website to order your crate subscription! And you can also order single crates, so if there was one you are disappointed that you missed, you still can get it! LOVE this! If you still aren’t sure about it and want to check out more reviews (by me), click here and you can see all of the previous boxes we received.

Do you subscribe to Kiwi Crate? What’d you think of this month’s box? Did you love it as much as we did?

(*) There used to be this bird that would dive bomb me when I’d go rollerblading in high school. That d*mn thing got me EVERY day. Every day. It’s stupid little feet would literally touch my scalp.  Awful, just awful.  And then, by my old work, there was this HUGE cluster of birds. Thousands. They would fly over a certain intersection every night. It may have been the creepiest thing ever.
