The Internet: A Poll

Years ago, when we moved into our house, we had to wait for WEEKS to get the internet (and cable) turned on. Cable was kinda just meh to me, but the internet? OMG I almost cried when B told me we’d have to wait so long for an appointment. Although I worked and could use the internet there (we didn’t even have any sites blocked at my job while was amazing) and I had my cell phone it wasn’t enough. I had to buy an “unlimited” internet card for those few weeks. Turns out that unlimited doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone and I was stuck with a nasty bill for overages, but that’s a story for another day.

So I gotta know, how long could you go without internet? A day? A week? An hour? I probably could go maybe a day or two without checking my e-mail and getting caught up on the latest Facebook gossip, but I won’t lie, the thought of it makes me super anxious. I am guessing this isn’t “normal”, but who knows? Could you make it a week? Or do you need access hourly????

I have no idea what I would do with all of the countless hours I would gain by not having access to the internet… no clue at all.

…to put it in perspective, I have been known to delete e-mails in my sleep… so, I’ll say that I can’t go more than 2-3 hours without some kind of “fix”.

Hmm…I can go a day or two. This weekend I was so busy I was barely on the internet. If I’m on vacation, I can go longer. Especially if I don’t have access to it. But I get email on my phone, so it makes it harder not to be “connected”

I could probably go a three day weekend without internet since I go camping on labor day weekend. So that’s the longest I’ve ever been without internet. Though it’s probably the fact that I’m so busy doing other things while camping that I don’t need to go on.

Our power was recently out for over 12 hours. Once my phone ran out of battery, I took to driving around our neighborhood with my phone plugged into the charger, staring at all of the utility workers in the hopes it would make them work harder…

So… an hour at most. :-p

I had a similar issue when we bought our new build house! Comcast wasn’t even available when we moved in!!! They didn’t even service our area!! AT&T was the same (and still isn’t available almost 2 years later) so we got stuck with DirecTV for cable and signed up for CLEAR for internet which was pretty much equivalent to NOT having internet. Plus we had zero cell service because we were out in no man’s land…or it seemed like it anyway. So I couldn’t even use my phone! I tried to use the hot spot to connect my laptop but no go. It was probably 2 freaking months before comcast made their way out to our area and I had to use CLEAR until then…so I pretty much stopped blogging because of that. Luckily I had my work (though we aren’t really supposed to use the internet…but here I am!) but still it wasn’t the same. I was so relieved once our comcast got hooked up and was ready to throw the CLEAR modem out the window.

I have gone 3 weeks without it. I was in Australia and then Mexico. I loved every minute of it. My husband is like you and he went every few days to an internet cafe to access the web. I actually still plan most of our vacays out of the country b/c he won’t be on the phone or internet (often) and I have him all to myself 🙂

Well I’m sure I could go a week and have when on a cruise and stuff but I start to get anxious when I can’t get on. Just last weekend I stayed at my dads so I only had my phone and even though I can get my email and on FB its just not the same. FB on the phone is so wrong I feel like I’m missing something since everything is just not there.

When I am home, I check my email more often that necessary on my phone. Same thing with IG and facebook [although facebook has been less and less lately!]. But while we were gone on the cruise, I went completely off the grid. No phone. No internet. No cable. Nothing! For 8 days! And it was so nice! I think I’m actually going to start an “unplugged” weekend once a month!

I go through phases where access is more important and then sometimes I don’t care. I could make my life work without having a computer and just having the internet on my phone. Pretty much as long as I have access to Instagram and my email, I wont go too crazy.

I could probably go a few days, but I would be pretty anxious about it. I’ve become pretty dependant on the internet…

I commented yesterday that I didn’t like leaving my phone at home when I went to the store….

I think that means I need a bit of an iphone break :-/

We had to wait for our internet connection to be connected in our new house too, so I insisted on staying at our rental for the connection. Wasn’t a hard sell, as DH couldn’t go without cable either. I think we’re both addicted!

I can go a week…If I am on a cruise and can’t use my phone or the net! I did it this year, and it was amazing, and awful at the same time!

I was mostly offline for the past 4 days as I played hostess to some relatives and while I felt fine then, what gives me stress is the catching up part when you actually get back online. Have you ever felt that? Gosh, I’m still trying to get caught up.

Making me think about being without connection to Twitter, Facebook, Email, Instagram, all my food blogs not to mention TMZ and my favorite subscription box blog? That’s just cruel and unusual punishment! I suppose I could last a day or two but I would either have to be heavily medicated, have access to many bottles of tequila or have my mind wiped by aliens.

  17. Susan

I could go several days, maybe up to a week. One of my issues is that I pay almost all bills online now, so if I couldn’t get online, I’d be paying some stuff late. That and I wouldn’t be able to keep up on TMZ. Priorities, right?

A day or less. I’ve been thinking of you and your internet-less state. I was thrilled to see your recent FB post! 🙂

  19. sara

I say a day or less because it’s how we watch TV. We NEED the internet for Netflix and Hulu!

Now my phone….that’s another story. 🙂

I didn’t have it for a month at home but had access to it at work… I was fine with it. But it really messed up my fantasy football leauge… I needed to make changes Sunday mornings and you need the internet to do that – I blame this, and the fact that I had a baby during the season for losing that year. (I won the year before and it was a huge upset to the men).

Okay – who is the one vote for not needing the Internet? You and my husband would get along. I don’t even think he knows how to turn a computer on.
