July Kiwi Crate - Wonders of Water
July Kiwi Crate – Wonders of Water

The July Kiwi Crate theme is “Wonders of Water” and includes two projects – “my watercolor animals” and “my floating sailboat”.  This review has taken forever to get posted because of L’s busy summer social life.  He’s up-north, he’s swimming, he’s just a busy kid these days!

The Box

Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post (aka very slowly).  For that reason  I try not to stalk it and am just surprised when it shows up.

First Look

This month, Kiwi Crate included a stuffed Kiwi (which of course is their mascot) in 1,000 random boxes.  They did this before (maybe last winter) and we didn’t get one.  So when they announced it again, I was all I WANT THAT KIWI.  And when the box showed up I tore into it and discovered that yes, we got one!  Woot woot!

I didn’t take a picture of the information card, but you can see it in the picture at the top.  Here are the details:

Project #1: My Water Color Animals

Project #1: My Watercolor Animals
My Watercolor Animals – The Supplies

The first July Kiwi Crate project was “my watercolor animals” and included everything you need to mix colors and decorate your own colorful sea creatures.  This project was high on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved discovering, creating and moving – fine.

Coloring

L and I both colored two sea animals – he picked fish and I did a turtle and a seahorse.  He insisted on coloring every inch of his with marker.  Every last inch.  I was all, oh no, you don’t need to do that, the colors will spread, blah, blah, blah.  He totally didn’t listen and proceeded to blanket his fish with markers.  And while he’s not a huge fan of coloring, this seemed to be different.  Maybe because there weren’t any lines to stay in?  I made a polka dot sea horse and a patterned turtle and just knew mine would be amazing.

My Watercolor Animals – The Final Product

Umm, turns out that L knows way more about watercolor animals than I do because his turned out amazing and, well, mine didn’t.  We may have oversprayed them with water, but his still turned out SO GOOD.  Next time I will follow his lead and just color a huge mess on the paper.

Project #2: My Floating Sailboat

Project #2: My Floating Sailboat
My Floating Sailboat – The Materials

The second July Kiwi Crate project was “my floating sailboat” and included everything you need to make your own sailboat that really floats!  The project was medium in the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved discovering, communicating and moving – fine.

Puffy Paint!
My Floating Sailboat – The Final Product

We had a bit of a rough time with the puffy paint, well I did.  That paint came out thick (and fast), which L thought was fine, but I had trouble working with.  I did get a handle on it and put L’s name on one of the sails.  L used so much puffy paint on his that it’s still wet and I feared hooking it up on the boat.  It might drip!  We haven’t tested this out yet, but hopefully will get a chance to today.  I think will enjoy learning about how boats steer too.

Explore More – Wonders of Water

Explore More

The July explore more included a few more ways to explore with water including building a clay boat (the clay was included by Kiwi Crate)  which you build to learn to make it float “how many drops?” which is trying to figure out how many drops (from an eyedropper) that you can fit on a penny.

The Kiwi!!

The Kiwi

And finally, The Kiwi!  We haven’t named him yet, but I am sure L will come up with something very creative like “Kiwi” or “birdy” or something ;).
