July The Happy Trunk

The 3-month subscription I had bought on Plum District to The Happy Trunk ended in June, but as luck would have it, The Happy Trunk contacted me to see if I wanted to check out the July box. Did I want to? Ha! Of course I did!

The Box

The Happy Trunk ships via USPS and took 3 days to get to me (I’m in Michigan) from Colorado. Not bad at all.

First Look

The first time you get The Happy Trunk the box includes a pair of scissors and a little note welcoming you to The Happy Trunk.  This must have been considered a first box since it was for a review because we have already gotten the scissors in our actual first box.  I really should bring a pair to my moms and keep a set up-north so L will be set to craft where ever he goes.  We’ve got lots of kid scissors!

The Information Card

I could not have been more thrilled when I saw that the July The Happy Trunk theme was “Camping” and included three projects “Make your own camouflage binoculars”, “Make a nature journal” and “Make a hobo bag on a stick”.  L is all about camping and I am still hoping that he and B can actually go on a real camping trip, at least for a night, this summer.

Project #1 – Camouflage Binoculars:
The first project we worked on was camouflage binoculars.  We got off to kind of a rough start with it because we realized that we only had one piece of camouflage paper and we needed two pieces – one for each role.  Either I threw it away or it wasn’t in the box or perhaps I just couldn’t see it (get it, because it was camouflage) so we used plain green construction paper instead.  No big deal. L handled the glueing and rubber band parts of this project and I did the rest.  We used a lot of glue….

Project #2 – Nature Journal: Next we worked on the Nature Journal.  L ate diner before us last night so while B and I ate, L sat at the table and worked on a few of these projects.  It’s fair to say that L is never going to art school and that he was thinking about popsicles when he was drawing.  I explained to him that it was a nature journal and that he should draw things he found in nature in it, like leaves ad trees and flowers.  Instead, he has our house drawn and his swingset ;).

~Project #3 – Hobo Bag on a Stick: The third and final project was hobo bag on a stick.  It included transfer paper (why don’t I buy this stuff – it’s so cool!) so you could easily draw / design your own.  L traced a few leaves and then had me do the rest.  I took the easy way out and just wrote his name all over the bag.

The July “Explore more” included cute little finger flashlight, which L wore out in about two seconds.  He loved it.  I should try and get him a wearable flashlight because I think he’d love it.  We also received markers in our kit, which I am assuming if for the Nature Journal?  That’s what we used them for anyway!

Explore More

As always, I impressed with The Happy Trunk.  It’s $19.95/month and L and I enjoy it every month.   The July theme fit right into summer and it’s something that interests L, so we thought it was great!
