Tuesday’s Troubles

It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Troubles. I’ve said it before, but this should be named “things i’m annoyed / confused / want to complain about”, however I couldn’t figure out how to make any of those into a snappy title, so Tuesday Troubles it is. And yes, I do realize that these aren’t true “troubles”. I know these for sure could be defined as first world problems!

~As you know, B and I have been eating a lot of hard boiled eggs during our Challenge. I mean a lot. He hard boils them and then it’s up to me to peel them. OMG this is a pain in my butt. I have no system or method to peel the eggs I just crack them and start. Is there a better way to be doing this? I feel like I am wasting time peeling hard boiled eggs. Someone must know an amazing trick to make my life a little easier. Peeling these eggs is a complete time suck.

~When we got home from up-north, we discovered a robin’s nest, complete with three eggs in the house part of L’s swingset. The problem with this would be that umm, birds have a nest in his swingset and are flying in and out of there all the time. L loves it of course, but it’d only be a matter of time before the nest gets “accidentally” touched and falls to the ground.  So we relocated it to a nearby tree.  Is this acceptable?  Will the momma bird be able to find the nest?

~Has anyone tried acupuncture?  There is nothing specific I need “cured” or “fixed”, but I wouldn’t mind trying it for back pain.  Or headaches.  I really don’t know much about it though other than it sounds interesting and I know a lot of people swear by it.

~So this Snowden dude who leaked all the surveillance secrets is living in the transit zone of the airport in Moscow correct?  Can someone explain this area to me?  Is it like a hotel?  A room?  A hallway?  Do we even know?  What?  I don’t get it at all.  I did a little digging and came up with this article from Slate, which gives a few options (he’s either being detained and is in cell like conditions, staying a posh hotel and eating Burger King or somewhere in Moscow that has been deemed a “transit zone”), but no one really seems to know do they?

~I need some clean eating ideas.  Maybe some make at home protein bars or muffins or cookies or something.  I’m getting bored with just eating fruits and veggies (I know that’s what this is all about, but still) and could use some sort of a baked good.  Any ideas??

That’s it from here for now! What’s troubling you today?

Once you’ve dumped the hot water out of the pan after boiling dump a bunch of ice in there and let them sit for a little while. The shells peel off SOOO much easier that way!

    1. Jenn

@Kyra: Totally agree! You’ve got to shock them to get the shell off in one go.

I have a lazier method because my fridge doesn’t have an ice maker. When the eggs are done cooking I put them in a bowl under the faucet and just run cold water over them. When they are cool enough to pick up I hit them on the counter (like 5 or 6 times) until the egg is cracked all all over. Then I stick them under the running water and the shell pretty much slips off. I’d guess it takes 5 seconds an egg. The only downside it your egg is all wet but I just let them dry on a paper towel for a minute.

I have always been a chronic sufferer of migraine headaches. They come on without me knowing it and then make m incredibly ill. I can usually sleep them off in a few hours if I can just get to sleep. 3 ibuprophen and a benadryl typically knock me out so that I can sleep it off, but then I have horrible migraine hangover for about 24 hours. Met a chiropractor at the gym and started talking about my headaches. He told me he could help me. He does adjust me, but does accupuncture as well. I can say that I have been headache free for about 6 months. Beyond my migraines, I would suffer from dull headaches a few times a week. I have had none of either since seeing him. I swear by it and tell everyone I know!!!! Too bad you don’t live here in good ‘ole Missouri….my chiro is the best and pleasing to the eye as well which helps :-)!

I don’t usually hard boil eggs, but when I do to make deviled eggs (with greek yogurt instead of mayo btw!) I put them in the oven in a muffin pan. I’d have to look for specifics but I think it’s somewhere around 350 for 20 minutes? Supposedly they are easier to peel than actual boiled eggs. Bonus: no cracking because the muffin tins keep each egg to itself. I know I’ve heard of adding some white vinegar to the water too but that tends to impart a taste on the eggs that not everyone is a fan of. Haven’t tried this method yet. I just stick them in the oven.

I haven’t tried these yet, but have them on my Pinterest board (go figure!): http://www.prevention.com/food/cook/make-your-own-energy-bars
This way you can customize what you want! Way to go on the Challenge – you guys are doing awesome!

Search Pinterest for peeling eggs. I’ve not tried it, but there’s some business about adding baking soda and the shells come off real easy.

  5. Alicia

Apparently you can make a hole at the top and bottom of the egg and blow hard through the top hole and the shell will slip right off

I used to do acupuncture and really loved it. It’s extremely relaxing. I didn’t go for pain of any kind but I liked it for what I went for.

  7. Kindra

Yes! I have tried acupuncture many times and just loved it! I really didnt have any major issues- I just wanted to try it out. A surprising and wonderful side effect for me is that I always sleep very good after I have it done. Just make sure you are hydrated before you do it, otherwise the needles can be a little uncomfortable.

  8. Jen

I agree that hard boiled eggs are a pain to peel! I do not enjoy that job.

  9. Kayleigh

If you try rolling them under your palm a bit on a hard surface with a bit of pressure then they peel easier.

  10. Carly

I did acupuncture for about 6 months and absolutely loved it. It was a guaranteed hour out of my week to relax in a quiet, spa-like room. It really does not hurt at all and it is pretty neat to learn more about it and where they put the needles and why.

  11. Kristen

I was just hard boiling eggs last night and read that adding salt in there helps peel of the shell…. Well that was a lie! I have read baking soda works though so I’m going to try that next time.

About moving a birds nest, I once had a birds nest fall so I picked it up and moved it back to where it was. The mother bird refused to go back. 🙁 apparently the scent humans leave makes the birds think the eggs are bad?? I hope this doesn’t happen to your nest!!!

Hate peeling hard boiled eggs and usually wind up taking some egg off the first few! Rolling them before starting to peel helps a little, but if you find an easy way, please share!

  13. Mom

Older eggs are easier to peel than really fresh eggs when they’re hard boiled. I wonder if it’s the same robin that built a nest in the swing set last year. Apparently she didn’t learn her lesson.

  14. Pilar

    The Birds Nest Thing,
It is advisable not to touch a bird’s nest because it has been noted some birds tend to reject or abandon such nests. In some circumstances, they also reject their eggs or nestling.

Check out the recipe page of this blog: http://www.littlebshealthyhabits.com/

I have gotten a ton of recipes off of there and they are all pretty simple (coming from someone who cooks/bakes very little).

Acupuncture changed my life–it has completely relieved my migraines. Also as Kindra mentioned, I sleep *really* well for several nights afterward.

I have an almost pathological fear of needles, too. It doesn’t hurt at all and the “needles” are about as fine as a human hair. I don’t really watch him put them in, but oh, the relief is just wonderful! Definitely give it a try, especially if you’re suffering from migraines.

Also, ask around. I tried three different practitioners before I found the one that was right for me. The first two I just tried from the phone book and neither of them did much for me (except for the sleep part–all of them did that). The third I tried on a recommendation from a co-worker.

Acupuncture was the only thing that fixed my SI Joint injury during my pregnancy. It also “jump started” my labor for me. 🙂 That being said, I think there are a lot of benefits for acupuncture. But it isn’t a “quick fix”. I find it can take a few visits for your body to respond to treatment. And I found the more consistently I did it, the quicker I responded too. So, if you try it…keep that in mind. 🙂 Overall, I am a huge acupuncture advocate.

omg – we love hard boiled eggs. This is my recipe:

put eggs in pot with cold water to cover.
    Bring to boil.
    let boil 1-2 minutes
    turn off heat and cover.
let sit for 12 minutes. Less if you like creamier yolks or you let boil for more like 2 minutes.
Meanwhile, fill bowl with ice and water. Leave in bottom of sink.
When time has elapsed, bring pot over to sink.
put eggs (none of the hot water) in ice bath.
swirl around and let the shells crack well (sometimes I just drop the hot eggs from up high).
Let cool for about 5 minutes.
    Crack more while under water.
    peel while under water.
    voila – beautiful hardboiled eggs!

  19. Jessica

We steam our eggs and then they are super easy to peel!

  20. I usually put something in the bottom of the sink and then peel my hard boiled eggs under cold running water, they peel off so quickly! Granted its a waste of water and I really should find another way but I don’t eat hard boiled eggs enough!

  21. Jodi

Try peeling them under running cold water, it seems to work for mine!

  22. Sarah H.

I’m a HUGE proponent of clean eating! I will literally swear by it. I’ve made some super yummy “mug cakes”, which are 100% clean and usually involve protein powder (I have some recipes that don’t involve whey if you’re not using that, though). I also have a couple of super yummy recipes for dinner, like turkey burgers or baked shrimp and onions. Just shoot me an email with any questions! I have snack ideas, too 🙂 Happy eating!

  23. Alice

I learned somewhere on the internet to pour out the hot water, put the pot cover back on and shake the pot up and down to crack the eggs. Then shock them with cold water. I tried to find the site, but maybe it’s just lazy me that cracks them in this way rather than taking each one out and doing it individually. I did did find this:

  24. Ashley C.

I agree with everyone else — shock the eggs with cold water until they cool down. I put mine in the fridge after cooling them, with the shells still on, and they still peel great even if its a day or two later!

As for clean eating, have you checked out The Gracious Pantry?! Her blog, and her FB page have a ton of clean recipes — including dessert type things, and baked goods.

  25. Sara

Check out Paleo websites for clean treats. There are TONS of them out there and they literally have every thing that you could think of. The Sara bars on my site pudgytopaleo.com are a huge hit and similar to Lara Bars but you get to make the flavor that you like.

  26. Jeannie

The friend I buy farm fresh eggs from told me adding vinegar to the water before boiling will make them easier to peel. And, like a couple of other posters, she said to let it boil 1-2 minutes, then turn off heat, cover, and let sit.

  27. Alicia Diane

My sister and I made some pumpkin protein bars from Jamie Eason and they were delicious! Easy to make and healthy! You can google the recipe
