For The Makers
August For The Makers

For the Makers is a monthly DIY accessories subscription kit. Each month you receive chic materials to complete four projects along with tutorials on how to complete them. I bought a 3-month subscription months ago on Fab.com and July was my second box.

The Box

For the Makers ships in an outer box, but I skipped all those pictures this month. Oh and I received this box in mid-July, but I didn’t get a chance to actually do the projects until a few days ago, which is why my review is delayed. They ship in a timely manner, I am the slow one here!

First Look

I was intrigued by the first look and was anxious to see what the projects were this month. I do sometimes feel like For The Makers is a little above my skill set (well I think last month was more so than this month), but I try and give them my best effort!  Oh, I should mention that all project instructions, which include step by step pictures, can be found on the For the Makers website.

The Information Card

The July For The Makers features the “Rising Tides Collection”.  According to For the Makers, The Rising Tides collection is sure to cure any lingering wanderlust. It’s an eclectic mix of African pattern, mid-century shapes, mod colorblocking, and irreverent embellishments and included the following projects:

~Aden Sunglass Pouch: I had the most trouble with this project.  I can sew two piece of fabric together (thanks to my mom and a middle school home ec type class), but I must not have followed the directions at the end properly, because my pouch doesn’t cinch.  I need to take another look at this because it’s cute and I would actually use it.

~Afia Necklace: This project was super easy and I wish I would have let L do this one with me.  It was just stringing beads on a cord and tying the ends.  Super easy!  I don’t know that this is really my style, but I enjoyed making it ;).

~Zuri Resin Bangle: The Zuri Resin Bangle wasn’t overly complicated to make and gave you the freedom to arrange the gems however you wanted.  I had some trouble making sure I didn’t get glue everywhere and ended up using a skewer to apply the glue.  In retrospect I could have just used a toothpick.

~Howlite Stacked Box: This was probably my favorite project of the bunch and probably the easiest as well.  As you had to do was glue the disks together and put them on top of the box!  I plan on using this box in my bathroom to store brushes!

Like last month, I didn’t do a cost breakdown on this box because I have no idea where I’d find all that information. It’d involve a big field trip to some craft stores and I’m not up for that!  Boxes are $29/month (I think I paid $21.67/month on Fab.com when they had the deal though) and I feel like I got my money’s worth. I think if nothing else, it is making me really appreciate how difficult it is to hand-craft things!

ETA: It appears that For the Makers is on Fab.com again!  You can get a 6-month subscription for $65 (reg. $87) or a 6-month subscription for $130 (regular $174).  That’s $21.67/month, which is just what I paid when I subscribed!  If you are thinking of subscribing, I’d do it through Fab.com now!  Just click here and search for “For the Makers”
