October Kiwi Crate
October Kiwi Crate

Instead of doing things on my “To Do” list yesterday afternoon, I decided to skip all that (it’ll get done. eventually.) and work on L’s October Kiwi Crate with him! I had heard this one was a great one and we just couldn’t wait any longer to get started.

The Box

Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post.  SmartPost has been pretty darn speedy lately (for them anyway) and I believe this took about 6 days to arrive from CA?  Could have been better, could have been worse!

First Look

If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crates are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L is right in the middle of that age range (he’s 5) and we’ve been getting the crates for over a year now.  Sometimes he needs more help than others, but we always find the projects enjoyable.

The Information Card

The October Kiwi Crate theme was “glowing animals” and included two projects “my glowworm friend” and “my racing jellyfish”.  We started with the glowworm:

Project #1: My Glowworm Friend

The first project was “My Glowworm Friend” and included everything you needed to make and decorate a cuddly glowworm friend.  It was low on the messiness scale, low on the grownup involvement scale and involved moving – fun, creating and caring.

Maybe the easiest (and coolest) Kiwi Crate project ever!  L put the stuffing in the sock and the eyes on and made me do the rest (put the rubber bands on and decorate).  Oh, wait, he named it too.  This is “squirmy”.  I didn’t mention to him right away that this guy glowed in the in the dark, but once he found out he thought it was SO cool. I suggested we give it to WB and L just looked at me like umm, not a chance of that ;).  Squirmy is all his.

Project #2: My Racing Jelly Fish

The second project was “My Racing Jellyfish” and was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved discovering, creating and moving – gross.

As we do with most projects, L and I split up the duties.  He opted for decorating and had me in charge of the ribbons and beads.  I was doubtful that this was actually going to work, but to my surprise it did!  And I think L was surprised as well.  These have glow in the dark stickers as well, which L loves.  No question, things that glow in the dark are cool.

explore! Magazine

explore! Magazine

This is Kiwi Crate’s third month of “explore! Magazine” and I am still loving it.  It’s got additional project ideas, comics, coloring pages, book ideas, etc. all that relate to the month’s theme.  We don’t always work on it when we receive it.  It’s more of am I’m bored at a restaurant or there’s nothing to do kind of activity for us!

Holiday Crates Sneak Peek

This isn’t the world’s best picture, but Kiwi Crate also included details on this year’s holiday crates.  They are offering “Thanksgiving Turkey’s Crate”, “Crafty Christmas Crate”, “Handmade Hanukkah Crate” and “Little Christmas Crate” this year and included a coupon code “GIVEJOY” for $5 off your order!

What’d you think of Kiwi Crate this month?  Did you love that little glowworm as much as we did?  If you are interested in subscribing, head to the Kiwi Crate website to order your crate.
