The Homegrown Collective, who kindly sent me this box to review, includes seasonally appropriate, professionally curated products that deliver the satisfaction of living a more self-sufficient & sustainable lifestyle to your doorstep each month.

December Homegrown Collective
The Box

The Homegrown Collective ships via USPS Priority Mail. They usually ship near the end of the month (sometimes I won’t even get the box until the following month), but this month they shipped early because of the holidays. This one shipped on the 20th and I received it on the 24th, so that 2 Day Priority Mail didn’t quite work out.

First Look

I wasn’t expecting the box to arrive so early and hadn’t even had a chance to guess what was inside this month.  Even from the first lookI still couldn’t figure out what the projects were going to be.

The Information Cards

The December Homegrown Collective theme was “Naturally Essential Home Remedies & Cure-Alls” and included the following projects:

~Herbal Tintures: I have to tell you, I had no idea what a tincture was before yesterday.  It turns out it’s an “alcohol-based derivative of a fresh herb or other natural plant material as an alternative medicine”.  I have not started this yet, but it included your choice of herbs, which each have different benefits and takes about 30-45 days from start to finish.  Once finished, they recommend you take 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon at the first sign of a cold up to 4 times per day.  If anyone already uses this, I would love to know what you think and if you recommend it.

~Eucalyptus Vapor Cups: These are great!  I could not wait to get started on them and  couldn’t believe how easy it was to make my own shower bombs.  All that’s in them is baking soda and eucalyptus and essential lavender oil.  You mix it all, put it in the oven and bake for 20 minutes and that’s it!  I seem to now have a cold (not a surprise considering everyone else around me is sick) and cannot wait to test one of these out tomorrow!

~Essential Oil: Oregano, much to my surprise, is known as nature’s antibiotic.  It’s been shown to kill unwanted bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses.  I have never tried essential oils before (that I can recall anyway), but I’ve got nothing to lose (except this cold) so why not??

As usual, I didn’t do a value calculation for the December Homegrown Collective box since it would have been too difficult.  And as always, I wouldn’t describe The Homegrown Collective as a “value box”.  It’s a way to learn about and try new, “green” things and see what works for you.

Boxes are $48 /month and, of course, are even cheaper if you buy a 6-month ($39/month) or 12-month ($35.75/month) subscription!  If you are interested in subscribing, or just want to learn more, click here.  And don’t forget to use the code “RAMBLIN10″ to save $10 off your first box!!!

I just started taking oregano oil about a month ago by suggestion of a coworker who can’t take a lot of meds due to a health condition. I get wicked sinus headaches in the fall and winter and that stuff clears you out! I’ve been taking it daily and no sinus headaches at all! I’ve also managed not to catch any office bugs which is rare since when someone gets sick at my job it spreads like wildfire. It’s really unpleasant to take (it burns and makes your eyes tear. It literally takes your breath away!). But the benefits definitely outweigh the temporary discomfort. It’s also good on acne and spot treatments

Ohhhh, that is good to know! Thank you!

This was my first box and much appreciated as I have had a sinus infection for three weeks and am too busy to go to the Dr. The shower bombs failed as the smell disappeared after sitting overnight. I added a few more drops and placed them in a jar to see if they will work now.

I’m using the oregano oil religiously and it seems to make me feel a little better. I plan to start the tincture with my mom when I get a day off. I have made tinctures before for cleaning and diluting. I have a thyme one in the fridge I started a year ago. Benefits are similar to oregano.

Interesting!!! I can’t wait to start mine!

And I must have used way too much in mine because they still smelled in the morning. My husband came home the night I made them and was like what happened in here??????

I love the Homegrown Collective! It’s my absolute favorite subscription box. This months was so welcome as I have been feeling quite icky. I like to look at the price as paying for a project day, date night, or just learning how to do something new. I now know how to eat a pomegranite! Ha! Love your review 🙂 I’m pregnant so can’t wait to try the oregeno oil after I have my baby! Genius idea!

Because of my recent hysterectomy I am now in the menopause at 33 (so fun!). Anyway, despite medication I was still getting hot flushes and my reflexologist recommended a sage tincture and it really worked. So I am a fan of tinctures, hopefully that one works for you!

That sounds so NOT fun at all!!!!! But that is amazing that it worked!

The vapor cups didn’t work for me either. They smell wonderful after and during making them, and then in the shower, nothing. Dissolved very quickly and not one whiff of scent. I wanted so much to love these. I have to wonder, weren’t these tested before mailing out the boxes?
