February 2014 Mantry

B’s February 2014 Mantry arrived yesterday and I was super excited about it because, for once, B was actually home when it arrived!

Mantry, If you aren’t familiar, is the Modern Man’s Pantry. It’s a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them.  At $75/month it’s a spendy box for sure, but B totally loves it.

The Box

Mantry ships via UPS Smart Post.  It starts out as UPS and then typically ends up being delivered by the Post Office.  However, this month ours was delivered by UPS, which got it to us a day early!

Since I wasn’t expecting Mantry to arrive yesterday I  hadn’t had a chance to peek for spoilers (I always try and peek at them), meaning I was totally unspoiled going into this one.  As always I love the Mantry crates and B is still working on how he’s going to build his basement bar with these.

The Information Book

The February 2014 Mantry theme was “Coffee and A Smoke” and is a celebration of two of America’s oldest vices.  This month includes the following products from six makers using smoke and coffee in their process:

~La Quercia Smoky Borsellino ($12):  We received a different variety from this brand back in April and it was very well received.  B is taking this to work where I am sure it will be eaten in no time!

~Franklin BBQ Expresso BBQ Sauce ($5.33):  Franklin BBQ is in Austin, TX and was recently named the best BBQ place in the country by Bon Appétit magazine! I am not sure how B will use this sauce yet, but I do know that if we are ever in Austin, we will be visiting this place!

~Lark Fine Foods Expresso Chip Shortbread ($6): I wanted to try these last night so bad and B was all, ohhh, but they have expresso in them and it’s kind of late…..  Umm, it was seriously like 5pm.  Not sure when he turned into my Dad??  Regardless, I am dying to try these and with or without him, I am trying them today.

~Hippie Chow Mocha Hazelnut($6.99): This too is headed off to work with B.   I am kind of jealous because I think that this is a granola I could get into.

~Olive & Sinclair Buttermilk White Coffee ($6.99):  Amazing!  I have loved every chocolate I have tried from them and this one was no exception.

~Dave’s Coffee Syrup ($5.50): Dave’s Coffee Syrup has appeared in a few boxes we have received (Mantry being one of them), but I don’t know that we have received this flavor before?  We usually mix it with milk, but you can dribble it on coffee as well or add to recipes.

All totaled I came up with a value of $42.81 for the February 2014 Mantry – “Coffee and A Smoke” edition.  Maybe the worst value in comparison with the box cost ever, but it’s not my least favorite box at all.  This obviously isn’t one we get for the amazing value.  It’s totally for the curation and fun of it!  Every single thing in this box will get used up and that’s a good sign for any box.
