Zoobean, who kindly sent me this package to review, is a monthly subscription service which helps you build your individual child’s literacy with remarkable children’s books and apps selected just for him or her. You may select from a monthly book delivery service (from $9.99/month) that gives you one hardcover or paperback book each month, along with an app recommendation + literacy guides or a digital service option (from $2.99/month) and receive weekly personalized app + book recommendations that come with literacy guides.
I received the monthly book delivery service for review and this one is for L, who is nearly 6. I also received one for WB (who is almost two), which I will review separately. Since the subscription is a two part service (the monthly book and the apps), I will break up the review as well.
The Book:
Zoobean ships via USPS Media Mail. It took about three days to arrive, which I believe is some sort of Media Mail record! I haven’t received WB’s package which shipped at the same time though, so as you can see, Media Mail shipping time varies.
L received the book “Nino Wrestles the World” along with a digital reading guide. The reading guide (which is e-mailed shortly after your book ships) includes projects for Before You Read the Book, During Reading and After Reading. It also includes all of the instructions for an Activity to make a Luchador Paper Mask (inspired by the book)!
L and I read a lot of books, but we are guilty of not discussing them like we should be! And this book is fabulous. The artwork is gorgeous and L loved the story. And he loved the Spanish words that were sprinkled in the book because he likes to think he can speak Spanish when he knows them ;). And since I am sure someone else is thinking it too, yes, this totally reminds me of Nacho Libre.
The App:
The Zoobean app selected for L this month was “One Globe Kids” and features kids living in all different parts of the world who invite you learn about the foods they eat, the languages they speak and more. It’s real kids, real pictures, etc. I am not sure if we will end up buying the paid version of the app, but L liked exploring the free one.
The Zoobean plan I received is $14.95, which includes the monthly hardcover book + the digital reading guide + the app selection and app companion. If you are interested in just the Digital Service, it’s $2.99/month and you will receive a Receive a weekly email that includes an expert created Reading Guide or App Companion along with a book or app recommendation. And then you can pick up the book at the bookstore or borrowing it from your local library! I am loving this idea for summer. I know that L is going to need something to keep him in at least a partial school mode this summer and I think this is a great balance!
