The Box

SquareHue ships via USPS First Class Mail and arrives during the first week of the month.  Lots of boxes come mid-month, so I liked that this one came nice and early.

First Look

This was my first ever SquareHue and I was impressed right away.  I loved the packaging and really liked how it wasn’t a big box with a punch of packaging material.  They figured out how to ship in a size appropriate box and I appreciated that.

The Information Card

The April 2014 SquareHue collection was The Passport Collection: AMSTERDAM and included the following colors:

~Beethovenstraat (High Gloss Creme): This is exactly the color of Kermit the Frog.  And I mean that in a good way!  I don’t have a color like this and while I don’t know that I have ever looked for one, I think it will work nicely as an accent color.  I’m thinking all pink and then one green glittery one?

~Kalverstraar (High Gloss Creme): Every time I look at this I see a different color.  Sometimes it’s more red.  Sometimes more pink.  Sometimes more orange.  It goes on nicely and is my favorite one in the box I think!

~P.C. Hooftstraat (Duochrome): Hopefully you can tell just how pretty this color is.  It reminds me of a night sky.  Very very pretty!  And I know I have nothing like this one.

If you are in the United States, Square Hue is $19.99/month ($14.99 + $5 shipping), which breaks down to $6.67/polish.  That is less than what you’d be paying at the store and this is a great way to buy polish since you know you aren’t buying a bottle some random person opened at the store and tested on their nails.  There’s always that chance and I always wonder about that when I go shopping.

I looked into Square Hue before deciding to go with Julep. I didn’t like that everyone gets the same box every month. At least with Julep you do get a little bit of a choice. Plus I really like the range of colors and vibrancy of the Julep.

That being said, after you’ve had time to apply the SH nail color I would be interested to know how you like its formula vs. Julep. Does it go on evenly & without streaks, how many coats until it is opaque…that kind of thing.

I find the Julep bottle does lend itself to getting some large drops once in awhile, as the color slides down the long brush, which can make it a little bit more of a pain to apply. They also only have .27oz in their bottles and Square Hue looks like they have .5 which is more comparable to OPI & Essie. So three bottles at approximately $20 versus the $8-9 per bottle it costs me to get one of those two in the store does make the Square Hue polish a decent value if their formula is good.

I liked how it went out, but I only tested one. I like these way better than the Julep bottles for sure. They are cute, but not overly user friendly. As for being comparable to Julep, I think that’s hard because I feel like Julep isn’t always consistent.

I have tried julep and I can say square hue is so much better. You get better polish, you get more polish, and I like there company so much more. I had them both at the same time and I dropped julep after trying square hue. I hope this helps 🙂
