May 2014 Mantry – “Campfire Cookout”

B’s May 2014 Mantry arrived today! Just in time for the holiday weekend which works out perfectly! If you aren’t familiar with them, Mantry (aka the Modern Man’s Pantry) is a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them.  At $75/month it’s a spendy box for sure, but B totally totally loves it.

The Box

Mantry ships via UPS Mail Innovations I upgraded to UPS for an additional $3.50 in the UPS My Choice thing so I could make sure that it arrived before the weekend. I wish that FedEx offered that with FedEx Smart Post because I would be upgrading left and right! Mantry always ships around the 21st of the month and takes just a few days to arrive (even less if you have UPS deliver it).

First Look

I hadn’t gotten a chance to peek at any boxes on Instagram yet so I was totally spoiler free! And B was home when this box arrived, so it made it even more fun to open.

The Crate

I mentioned it last month, but Mantry now allows you to “Opt Out” of receiving the wooden Mantry crate each month.  Your items will just come securely wrapped in a the cardboard package instead. And like I said before, if they offered a discount for opting out I’d totally do it, but they don’t so I am still getting the crates. We have a giant stack of them in the basement. I have used some for projects here and there, but we still have so many.

The Information Card

The May 2014 Mantry theme was “Campfire Cookout” which I thought was the perfect theme leading up to the holiday weekend and summer in general. The crate includes the following six items fit for the great outdoors, even if your campsite happens to be in the backyard:

~Just Cook Herbed Coffee Rub ($8.50): Mantry suggests using this to wake up a couple of steaks which sounds delicious enough or using it in a breakfast sausage hash which sounds pretty amazing. I don’t even like sausage and I think this sounds so good.

~Olive & Sinclair Bourbon Nib Brittle ($12.99): I feel we have had this before? Maybe we have actually? I believe we even used Mantry’s suggestion of pairing some broken brittle pieces with some vanilla ice-cream? That, along with a caramel or fudge topping? OMG, now we’re talking.

~Vermont Smoke & Cure Summer Sausage ($6.98): Now I know B has had (and loved) this before. But this time instead of just eating it with cheese and crackers, it’s going in that breakfast sausage hash! Be sure to be on the lookout on my Instagram for it!

~Soberdough Green Chile Cheddar Brew Bread ($9): I kind of want to be in charge of making this bread because it looks so fun, but I am guessing that B will follow Mantry’s instructions to grab a 6-pack, drink five and save one for the bread.

~La Fundidora Fuego Salsa ($9): Mantry suggests putting this on your eggs or on a piece of the cheddar brew bread. I am going to have to let B decide what to do with this one since I am a wimp when it comes to salsa. And anything with the name “fire” in the name is just not for me.

~Broadbent’s Hickory Smoked Bacon ($7.50): B and the boys all love bacon so they will be happily cooking this up together one morning while I get to sleep in. That’s my plan anyway ;). I think it’s a pretty good one too!

All totaled I came up with a value of $53.97 for the May 2014 “Campfire Cookout” Mantry. I probably shouldn’t even do a cost breakdown on these because regardless, we are still going to subscribe! B loves Mantry and I think if he could only pick one subscription to keep, it’d be Mantry! I totally recommend this one as a unique Father’s Day gift idea. They did a special last year to make sure your gift crate arrived by Father’s Day and I will keep you posted if I hear that they are doing anything along those lines this year!

OMG that Vermont brand of sausage makes the BEST cured pepperoni I have ever had. If you ever run across it, buy it, and it eat. There. on the spot. Because it’s so good, cooking it might be doing it a disservice. I think I might need to make a grocery stop today…

I am wondering that myself. Maybe I should just get different sausage???

Mhm, that is the debate. But great hash comes from great sausage….or something like that…

OMG I just actually convinced my husband that he might want this box. (This is huge news, because he always has a reason not to get other man boxes.) He said once we move and get a grill, he’s down. (!) Love this box. And the crates.
