June 2014 Hatchery

Hatchery Tasting Box, who kindly sent me this box to review, is a monthly subscription box which brings curated, sample-size artisan ingredients and condiments to your doorstep. Each month you will receive 5-6 hand selected artisan ingredients, as well as, exclusive member promotions and discounts.

The Box

My Hatchery was a review box and shipped via FedEx, however I am not sure if other boxes ship the same way.  Hopefully a subscriber can let us know.

I absolutely love how everything is all packaged and wrapped.  Everything is safe, but it also has a fantastic presentation which I totally appreciate.

The Information Card

The May 2014 Hatchery Tasting Box doesn’t have a theme, however, every box does come with a fabulous Tasting Guide.  The Tasting Guide includes brand and product information for each of the items in the box along with a online recipe using the sample sizes included in the box.  I think it’s awesome that they not only tell you what everything is and what it would be good with, they go the next step and give you recipes so you don’t have to go hunting for them!  Here is what was inside:

~Toasted Coconut White Balsamic Vinegar and Tahitian Lime Olive Oil by Olivelle: Hatchery recommends that these be used in Tahitian Lime Gelato which is something I never would have even thought of.  It looks good though so maybe when B gets back we’ll make this happen.

~Stuart & Co. Beef Rub: I was thinking we could just use this on something on the BBQ, but then I saw Hatchery’s idea of a Spice-Rubbed BLT with Bacon and Avocado. I don’t even love bacon and I am all over this.  All over it.

~King Knish Five Spice(y) Ketchup: Alone this is just too much heat for me! I am not even sure I could handle it in the recommended lamb burgers.  Frankly I am not even sure I could handle lamb burgers, although they do look really really good.

~The French Connection Lori’s Salt Caramel Syrup: So the recommended use for this is grilled peaches with greek yogurt, but I am thinking of this + pancakes would be amazing.  Or even their other recommend use which is banana cupcakes with salt caramel frosting!

~Heidi’s Salsa Happy Medium Salsa: I was worried that this would be too spicy for me, but it’s not.  It’s more than the normal level of spice I like (which is just about none), but I thought it was good.

I didn’t do a cost breakdown on Hatchery, but at $25/month I feel like that is a very fair price for not only the samples, but also for the recipes and suggestions on what to do with your samples!  This way nothing goes to waste and you get to sample the items while trying a fabulous new recipe.

I think this was May’s box, but did your ketchup come half full? Mine wasn’t even half full and I thought that was a little cheap of them to do.

    1. Jennifer

Thank you -I will get that changed! Mine was about 3/4 full. More than half, but I still could see clear glass at the top. How do they normally ship?

    2. Stacey

Mine had seriously like a tablespoon in it! I thought I just got a dud or something. Crazy.

I love what you got in the box they sent you so much I went to their site to check it out. I mean, wo wouldn’t love samples plus a company that gives you recipes for sample sizes? It’s great for a single mom like me – when I cook, it’s only ever for (at the most) two adults. I just want to give you a heads up that the monthly subscription is $25/month (not $20 like you posted). It’s only $20/month if you purchase a 12 month subscription, so $240 up front. While I thought it was a great “gift” for myself for $20/month, I’m not really sure about the extra $5 month for a box with a product value of less than $20. Still on the fence.

Oh, thank you! I need to switch that! I swear it used to be $20!

It was $20 last month! Hope existing customers get to stay at $20… I haven’t seen any price update emails from them!

Love my Hatchery Box subscription. I love that they give recipes that use the samples…as opposed to some where you have to buy even more product to make the recipe they suggest. And for myself and my husband, the recipes for two are perfect. Usually no leftover product trying to figure out what to do with and no leftover food if we really don’t like it.

Product wise, some I like better than others. Some products I wasn’t sure about until I used them in a given recipe and then realized the product was really good. I’ve made three or four of the recipes and really liked them. I have a list of “full size” products that I plan on buying and two of the recipes will probably go into regular rotation.

I totally agree. Sometimes you think there is no way I would use this and then you use it in a recipe that is totally fabulous!

I love the Hatchery box. When I got my Hatchery box in May they had a promotion for 1st box for $10. START10 was still working at the end of May and possibly still is. I used my caramel syrup over homemade banana cake (added a pic to the company’s Facebook)… and used my salsa over an omelet I made with egg, goat feta, power greens & crushed tortilla chips. (posted a pic on the Heidi’s Salsa Facebook) So good.. Still trying to figure out what to do with the other samples. 🙂

I will have to see if it is still working! Thanks!
