We had a rainy afternoon here yesterday (actually a rainy / stormy afternoon), but luckily we had our July 2014 Kiwi Crate to keep up busy!
If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crates are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L is 6 and we usually do the projects together, but I changed it up this month and did the projects with WB!
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took the standard week to arrive. WB isn’t as good of a poser as L is, but we’re working on it.
I could not remember what this month’s theme was! I knew that I had seen it on the sneak peek thing they sent, but I had no clue what it was!
Turns out the July 2014 Kiwi Crate theme was “Beach Day” and included two projects: “My Crazy Crabs and “My Sea Foam Painting”. Since Kiwi Crate advertised their Summer Adventure Series I am guessing that everyone got the same theme this month, but if you got something different, let me know! Here is what it contained:
Project #1: My Sea Foam Painting
The first project we worked on was “my sea foam painting” and included everything you needed to paint your own bubbly scene. It was high on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved moving – fine, creating and discovering.
WB and I worked on one together (he told me where to put the colors and which one to use) and then I let him try one on his own. Totally didn’t get how to blow the bubbles out of the straw which I was expecting. So he improvised and dumped the remaining solutions on his paper! Problem solved. He was very pleased with himself and I must say, he got some great vivid colors ;).
This was my final project. WB’s is still dying and probably will be for the next week or so, therefore, he hasn’t been able to color his ocean scene yet. LOL! I loved the way the bubble painting came out and look forward to doing one in a bunch of colors with L. I think he will love it and it sounds like such an easy DIY because we already have everything we need to do it (food coloring, dish soap, straws)!
Project #2: My Crazy Crabs
The second project was “My Crazy Crabs” and included everything you needed to make two hermit crabs and play fun beach games. This product was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved moving – fine, exploring and creating.
WB decorated the shells while I built the crabs. I think his favorite part was throwing the ballot them to knock their shells off though! He was pretty good at that and would just laugh and laugh when he did it ;).
I have been saving these explore! magazines for L’s Quiet Time boxes. They having drawing activities, puzzles, games and craft ideas in case runs out of things to do. The best part about their projects / crafts is that they generally consist of items we have around the house so it never requires a trip to the store just to get the supplies!
