L and his friend were roaming around the house bored a few days ago so I decided to break out the August 2014 Kiwi Crate for them to work on! They were super excited about it and couldn’t wait to get started.
If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crates are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L and I have been doing the projects together for years and every now and then, WB gets in on the act!
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and takes a week to arrive.
Kiwi Crate released a sneak peek of their Summer Adventure Series (of which August is the last box) so I knew exactly what the theme was, however, I wasn’t totally sure what the projects entailed.
The August 2014 Kiwi Crate theme was “Amusement Park” and included two projects “my bumper cars” and “my silly squirters”.
Project #1 – My Bumper Cars
The first project we worked on was “my bumper cars” which included everything you needed to build and decorate a pair of colorful bumper cars. It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved creating, discovering and moving.
Building the actual cars was super easy and fun, but not as fun as “bumping” them into each other. L’s car has the flames on it, while his friend used the lightening bolts. I am a fan of these because they are cushioned (like real bumper cars) so they won’t make dents in my wall every time someone rams one into it!
Project #2 – My Silly Squirters
The second project we worked on was “my silly squirters” which enabled you to design two targets to play your own amusement park game. The project was medium on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved moving – gross, discovering and creating.
L and J (L’s friend) got right to work. She did the tiger one while L worked on the clown one. They did quite an impressive job decorating if you ask me!
After we finished we took the little guys outside to test them out. I set them on two chairs in the backyard and we tried to see who could knock the ball down first. We didn’t end up using the silly squirter that came with it, we used squirt guns instead. We needed the contest to be totally fair, so we had to two of the same squirters!
Each Kiwi Crate also includes an “explore!” magazine which has puzzles, stories, drawing activities and other activities you can complete at home that relate to this month’s theme.
Also included in this month’s Kiwi Crate was a sneak peek of “The Time Traveler Series” which is coming this fall. The Time Traveler Series includes the following themes: September: “Castles & Catapults” (Construct a medieval castle and build a catapult to project it.), October: “Wild West” (Make a stuffed hobby horse to ride and play a game of bean bag toss “cattle roundup”!) and November: “Discovering Dinosaurs” (Make fossils with “bones” and clay, then make your own dinosaur dress-up costume for a game of dino tag.)!
