September 2014 Kiwi Crate

Our Kiwi Crate arrived late last week and we were all excited to see that green box in the mailbox! Kiwi Crate was one of the first boxes I ever subscribed to and we have no plans to stop subscribing anytime soon.

If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crates are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L and I have been doing the projects together for years and every now and then, WB gets in on the act!

The Box

Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took about a week to arrive. This month’s box was delayed a bit due to some quality issues with one of the projects in the box. Kiwi Crate sent out an e-mail about the delay and apologized in advance which was much appreciated.

First Look

Kiwi Crate announced their Fall themes in advance so I pretty much knew what to expect from this box. L and I has been waiting on this one, so we worked on it over the weekend while WB napped.

The Theme

The September 2014 Kiwi Crate theme was “Castles & Catapults” and included two projects “My Medieval Castle” and “My Launching Catapult”. Our box, however, did not include the “Explore!” magazine it usually comes with it. I don’t know if ours was forgotten or if they didn’t do one this month or quite what happened. I am going to e-mail them to see, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Project #1 – My Medieval Castle

Project #1: My Medieval Castle (The Instructions)
Project #1: My Medieval Castle (The Materials)

The first project we worked on was “My Medieval Castle” which included everything you needed to construct and decorate your own castle. The project was low on the messiness scale, low on the grown-up involvement scale and involved “creating”, “exploring” and “moving – fine”.

Project #1: My Medieval Castle (In Progress)

L did most of the work on this one. I think I opened all the packages up and that was about it. And I don’t even think that I did that as fast as he built this. We had some problems getting the flags to stay on the top of the castle, but that was the only issue we encountered.

Project #1: My Medieval Castle (The Final Product)

Looks pretty good doesn’t it? Once WB woke up he took control of the castle and was driving his trains through the doors. Turns out it works as a good tunnel system too.

Project #2 – My Launching Catapult

Project #2: My Launching Catapult (The Instructions)
Project #2: My Launching Catapult (The Materials)

The second project this month was “My Launching Catapult” and included the materials needed to build a catapult and launch different objects. It was low on messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “moving – fun”, “exploring” and “discovering”.

Project #2: My Launching Catapult (In Action)

This project was a tad more involved than the first one. But L loved it. Anything that involves launching projectiles across the room is a good thing in his book. And this thing seriously did launch far. Awesome project.

L and his Kiwi Crate!

I thought the September 2014 Kiwi Crate was well worth the little wait for it. Everything fit the theme perfectly, was well thought out and the quality was excellent. Another great month from Kiwi Crate for sure!
