Nicholas Black Box, who kindly sent me this box to review, is a monthly men’s lifestyle subscription box. Each month you will be mailed a box containing 5 lifestyle and grooming samples from an array of categories. These samples will be from well-known brands and some new to the market brands.

First Look

The first look was great!  The box was nice and full and looked to be packed with a bunch of great brands.

The Information Card

Nicholas Black Box doesn’t have a theme, but the information card was broken down into categories (Grooming, Skin Care, Fashion and Health & Fitness) and gave details on each of the items in the box.  Here is what was included in the September 2014 box:

~Every Man Jack Face Lotion with SPF 15 ($1.50):  B has tried a few products from this brand and has been happy with the results.  I suspect he will be packing this for his upcoming travels.

~Jack Black True Volume Thickening Shampoo ($.79) & Face Buff Energizing Scrub (~$1): You know what B doesn’t need?  Thicker hair.  LOL!  Seriously his hair is  already so thick and grows so fast.  I might steal this and see how it works for me.

~Shea Moister Tea Tree After Shave & Bump Preventer (~$1):  Now I know we have gotten this somewhere in the past as well.  I may have even bought it. Again this will be another useful item for traveling.

~Red Leaf Bath And Body Soap ($1.62): I just said I hoped to see this again somewhere and here it is.  B really likes this soap and now I want to try the woman’s line even more.

~The Tie Bar Socks ($8): I said earlier today that B’s bumble bee socks were the wildest ones he had, but these pink / purple camo ones are right up there.  It’s possible they are even wilder?  I don’t know if he will like them, but I do.

~KIND Bar Oats & Honey with Toasted Coconut (~$2): This is another good item for B.  He likes kind bars and this will make a good snack.  I packed a bar like this for L to take to school one day for his snack and he told me he was scared to eat it because he thought it had peanuts in it (and peanuts are not allowed at school).  I thought that was cute and can see where he would think that 😉

All totaled I came up with a value of $15.91 for the September 2014 Nicholas Black Box.  I liked the contents of this box, but wish the value were higher.  The box is $15.99/month if you sign up using the 20% off lifetime coupon (“intro“) so it comes it at just about the cost of the box.  If they can get their box values up, I think this is going to be one to check out for sure.

Hmm I wish they would come out with better men’s boxes. I ordered my hubby bespokepost and really like it but haven’t found any others. This box is a big fail I think. The value isn’t there and my husband would not be impressed by those socks. At all.

Bespoke is really nice. Does he want a grooming type one?

Yes ideally this is what I would like to get him I think. I haven’t been impressed by reviews of the five four club clothes box and I have looked at the men’s birchbox but I’m not really sure that one is so good either. He already side eyes all of my box purchases so I have to be picky when choosing new boxes (especially if it’s gonna be for him.) Really I just want to get him into a couple (or a few) boxes so that he has something to open every month also but it has to be something he likes too.

I couldn’t even find that when I looked! Thanks!

No problem. I love Kind Bars!!

I had high hopes for this box. I was really disappointed with the value. I think it was worth less than $16. I subscribe to birchbox man, bespoke post , and gq quarterly and NB didn’t seem to be as well put together as the others . I don’t know many guys that would wear those camo socks. I am giving them one more month. Hopefully the size of sample or number of samples goes up to justify the price. And seriously, I hope the fashion sense of the curator increases.
