Two holiday related questions today…..

1. When do you start decorating for the holidays? I know I ask this every year, but I love hearing everyone’s answers. I generally don’t start decorating for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving, but I might start a little earlier this year. But the tree never goes up until after Thanksgiving. We usually get the tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. We get a real tree so getting it too early could be risky!

2. Are you traveling for the holidays? Other than a trip up-north, I don’t believe we have any plans.  I have, however, always wanted to (and still want to) visit New York City during Christmas time.  It just seems so magical!

Can’t wait to hear your answers!  And don’t forget to go VOTE today!

We decorate the day after thanksgiving. And this year we are planning to stay home!! We’ve been so busy with traveling in years past, so I’m excited to stay home.

    1. Jennifer

      That will be nice!!

  2. Becka

We usually start decorating Thanksgiving weekend. NYC is really magical during Christmas time, I lived in Manhattan for 5 years and it was one of the best times of the year (although it can be insane and exhausting too). I watch “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” to get my fix every year. 🙂 As for travels, mostly staying home this year, minus a brief trip to Nashville with a friend the weekend of Dec 12-14… hope it’s festive! Never been to Nashville.

    1. Jennifer

I totally need to make it a point to go during the holidays!

  3. Lindsay R

I wanted to start on Saturday but my husband said NO! I am just sooo excited for the Holidays!! I will wait a few weeks and decorate then, my kids love it so why not start a little early.

We don’t have any plans to travel anywhere far just have to visit a bajillion family members for dinners, lunches, presents etc and we are taking a mini day trip to go ride the Polar Express and visit the North Pole!!!

    1. Jennifer

My kids LOVE it too. And they like to help with decorating which is awesome.

I have been wanting to do that Polar Express trip. We have one here and it looks neat, but it’s so $$. Have you been before? Is it worth it?

      1. Lindsay R

This is our first year going, my brother took his kids before and they loved it, he said it was SO cool def worth it. My kids both have December birthdays so the Polar Express thing is going to be part of their birthday present.

  4. Jaime

I kid you not my inlaws start in October. And some of their Christmas stuff stays up all year. I, myself start in November with outside lights and what not with the bulk over thanksgiving weekend. To each their own though. Christmas is wonderful. We aren’t traveling we just bought ourdream home so people are coming to us.

    1. Jennifer

In October! One house in our neighborhood left their wreath up all year this year. LOL.

  5. Sneaky Burrito

I don’t decorate. Because CATS. (And a 95-lb dog with a tendency to eat foreign objects…)

    1. Traci

Same, two dogs 80lbs+, decorating has become a no go.

    2. Jennifer

      LOL!!!!!!

    3. Jennifer

And my dogs, to this day, eat the pine needles when we first get our tree. You’d think they’d learn. They do not though.

  6. Amy

I usually start after Thanksgiving because Xmas is really the only holiday I go all out with decorations with. As for traveling, my husband wants to go away for Xmas–like the 19th-26th–and then open gifts when we get home. I’d be all for that except he wants to drive and I refuse because if I’m going away over Xmas I want it to be hot and beachy and I can’t tolerate that long of a drive and my husband won’t fly. Soooooooo we will probably be here, cold and dreary lol.

    1. Jennifer

I really like to go all out with Christmas too. It takes so long to decorate that I feel like the decorations need to be p for a LONG time!

Where does he want to go???

      1. Amy

He wants to drive 12 hours to Pawley’s Island, SC and I want to FLY to either Captiva or the Bahamas…..it’s not going to work lol. I want somewhere WARM and beachy, not beachy and sweatshirt weather.

        1. Jennifer

Oh I am so with you on this one!

  7. Lily

We were planning on going to NY this Thanksgiving. I also dream about the city during Christmas – it does seem magical. We even bought the Amtrak tickets, but instead, we’re closing on our first house (!) so we decided to cancel the trip since we’ll be in the mist of moving. I did hear it’s better with kids – and since I don’t have any, maybe I’ll wait a bit. But I bet your kids would have a ball – they seem like the perfect age to love it.

    1. Jennifer

      Congrats on your first house!!!!!

  8. Jill

I start decorating for the holidays Thanksgiving weekend. We don’t travel because all of our family is here in town.

On a side note – did you see the Lego type figures on Jane.com today? They have TMNT, and a ton of cute ones. like the Hulk. It just made me think of L and his cute little shelves.

    1. Jennifer

I didn’t see them! I need to look!

  9. Cristina

I usually start decorating for the holidays on black friday. However, this year I will be hosing Thanksgiving at my house, and I am thinking of having some garland up since our Elf on the Shelf will make his comeback that day as well. And I want the house to look festive.

We will not be traveling for the holidays. We talked aobut taking a weekend trip to Hollywood to take our son to Universal Studios, but if we go, it will be the second week of December.

    1. Jennifer

I haven’t decided when our elf will reappear! I think my 6 year-old is ready though!

  10. Chrissy

We will take down the Halloween stuff over the next week or so and then the Christmas stuff goes up. Tree and all (not a real tree). Christmas is my favorite time of the year so I like to be surrounded by the decorations for as long as possible!

We don’t travel during Christmas (we did when I was younger, we went to Disney for Christmas and I always hated it) but we do go to NYC a few times during December to see the tree and shop the Union Square Holiday Festival! I love being so close to the city (it’s only a 90 minute drive!).

    1. Jennifer

Oh that’s awesome! 90 minutes is a great distance.

Why did you hare going to Disney!

      1. Chrissy

Oh, I loved Disney I just didn’t like it over Christmas. I was used to cold weather and snow and feeling cozy all wrapped in my festive house with my pets – being in warm weather, not at home, just felt wrong. It didn’t feel like the holidays. We did it a few times but then started going to Disney in November which was much more fun!

        1. Jennifer

And way less crowded I bet!

      2. Chrissy

I love that NYC is so close. My best friend lives there so I always joke that her place is my city home.

  11. Erin S

You should definitely go to NY – I am from there and have been a dozen times, it never loses its magic 🙂 I miss it terribly. If you go email me – I can send you a list of not well known must sees!

    1. Jennifer

I will! I have a cousin who lives in Manhattan and I NEED to get out there before she moves home in a few years!

  12. Hilda

I decorate the first week of December. We get our tree in the middle of December. If I get it too early, my tree seems to get too dry by Christmas! No traveling for us. I’m actually taking time off for the holidays this year and I can’t wait.

    1. Jennifer

We have been having amazing luck with our trees the past few years. Except for the one that tipped over of course…

  13. Britney

We’re heading to NC for Thanksgiving this year. Super excited, all of my grandma’s kids and grandkids will be there, so we’re planning something to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary. Not sure where we’re headed for Christmas. May just have it our house, the hubby and I just purchased earlier this year. Hopefully, we’ll have finished decorating by then(:

    1. Jennifer

      50 years! That is amazing!

  14. cindy

my 3 targets went 70 yesterday and 50 on candy sign says 30
the wreaths are easy peasy and sams and Costco best place to et deal on the mesh
sun when I took down Halloween, I changed all twinkling lights outside but don’t turn on yet will hang rest of outdoor decorations and put tree up this wk like to enjoy the holidays and love having friends and family in the nxt 2 months, have my cards done stockin stuffers and office and friend and people I do biz with all wrapped and actually some reg presents wrapped too, that 24/7 hallmark station got me in the mood and it was a nice break from reg chores and I hate the craziness as it gets closer

    1. cindy

target also has ugly sweater kits …..wish id thought of that one….also 9.99 mesh at cracker barrel

    2. Jennifer

I finally made it to Target today! I didn’t buy too much though. Some pjs and t-shirts for next year!

  15. Lindsay Redekop

I decorate whenever the mood strikes! Never before Veterans Day because I find it insensitive but sometime between the end of November and December 1st. Typically I start wrapping gifts at the beginning of November but as I just got married, I haven’t even done any holiday shopping yet!

    1. Jennifer

      Congrats on the marriage!!!

  16. Kristin

Your all fixed no crazy phishing warning!

    1. I don’t decorate until after the kidlets birthdays are done. So not until after the 7th of December. Its always on days off so it fluctuates from year to year. I remember my daughter dragging out the tree last year and forcing me to put it up. She was excited to get decorating but her birthday is in November.

    2. no travelling for us but I’m working until 7am Christmas morning. My teens won’t be up that early so I’ll get a nap this year. I used to book it off for vacation but with the kidlets being older I’d rather have summer off.

    1. Jennifer

I have no idea what that was! I have a site protection service that notifies / warns / fixes me of everything and after you said that I ran a scan and came up with nothing! They seriously warn me if I have a LINK to a blog or website that has a phishing scene or whatever!

      1. cindy

I had it happen earlier too..scared me

  17. PA Anna

    1. We usually start decorating the day after Thanksgiving. The neighborhood tends to put outdoor decorations up early if there is nice weather instead of doing it later in the cold.

    2. I’m not sure if we are traveling or not. My My older son is tagging along to a conferrer I am attending this month. We are going to see Trans Siberian Orchestra and do a few other Christmas themed events. Canada is a possibility.

    1. Jennifer

That is another issue around here too. You gotta get those outdoor decorations up before it’s -20 and snowing!

  18. PA Anna

    conference not conferrer.

  19. Mrs. L

Our Halloween stuff won’t start coming down until sometime this weekend (and will probably take a week to get all boxed up and back under the house). Christmas decorations won’t go up until after Thanksgiving (my husband won’t even listen to Christmas music until then) and then it usually takes us a couple of weeks to get decorations up.

We did however, buy our Christmas cards this past weekend so I’m hoping to work on them in the coming weeks and get them out December 1st.

    1. Jennifer

Ahh, Christmas cards! I should get on that as well…

  20. Hannah

    1. I’ll start putting Christmas decorations up after Thanksgiving. They’re my 2 favorite holidays, besides my birthday 😉 so I like giving both of them they’re fair share of excitedness. This is my first holiday season living with my boyfriend, but luckily we both love the holidays, so he’ll be fine with decorating whenever I am

    2. We’re going to North Carolina the weekend after Thanksgiving to visit some of his family & have another Thanksgiving dinner, but for Christmas we’re staying home & splitting up our time between our parents houses. This is my first time in 23 years that I won’t be waking up Christmas morning at my parents house, so strange. I think I’m more freaked out about than my parents are!

    1. Jennifer

That is always a weird feeling! I can’t remember when I stopped spending the night there, but it was kind of weird to wake up on Christmas morning alone in my condo!

  21. Anna

We start with an Advent calendar on the first day of Advent (not of December). In accordance with tradition, the tree goes up on Christmas eve and remains up for the 12 actual days of Christmas, with a nativity set.

    1. Jennifer

Do you get a real tree?

  22. Marla

For the last several years, I have been very bah humbug about the holidays, so I have not been decorating at all. But I am hoping to find my holiday spirit this year. My son and his girlfriend will be in town for Christmas, so I need to make my house festive! Which means I will decorate on my pre-bah humbug – the first weekend in December.
If we do travel at all, it would be up north. But Christmas in New York sounds like an amazing idea!

    1. Jennifer

      Maybe decorating will un-humbug you???

  23. Sam Stamp

    1. I start decorating for the Holidays around the 1st of December.

    2. Usually my boyfriend & I go to our hometowns for the Holidays but this year there is a possibility that we may be spending Christmas in North Carolina with his older brother. Even though I would miss out on spending Christmas with my family I hope the NC trip becomes a reality! I love it down there!

    1. Jennifer

      Where are you from?

  24. Sam Stamp

I’m from Syracuse, NY though I live in Rochester, NY.

  25. Bonnie

I always wait until after Christmas, but since the kids have grown it has been later and smaller. This will be my first Christmas with SO, so we will be staying here. Thankgiving will be our big holiday. I guess that is what happens when two foodies get together.

    1. Jennifer

Have a great first holiday season together!
