January 2015 Beauty Box 5

B and I (and WB) got back from running all of our errands today just as the mailman was dropping off the mail. Perfect timing! One of the boxes I received (and opened first) was my January 2015 Beauty Box 5.

In case you aren’t familiar, Beauty Box 5 is a monthly subscription service that delivers a sample box of all things beauty. Each box contains 4 – 5 samples of a variety of makeup, skin care, fragrances and everything in between!  Boxes are $12/month if you do a month-to-month subscription, however, I subscribed a while back when they had a crazy deal that brought the cost of an annual subscription down to $6.58/month.

The Box

Beauty Box 5 ships via DHLGlobal Mail. It starts out with DHL and then is delivered by USPS. I believe it took about a week to arrive. Not amazing, but not awful either.

The first look?  Just kind of meh.

The Information Card

The January 2015 Beauty Box 5 theme was “hello!” and included the following items:

~Coastal Scent Eye Shadow (~$2): Wow.  These are some bright shadow colors.  WB saw me taking a picture of them and yelled “I wanna paint too”!  I didn’t get it at first and then I realized he thought I had finger paints.  LOL!  I actually may let him go ahead and paint with these because the colors are a little too much for me.

~Sally Sansen Salon Effects ($9.99): These aren’t my favorite brand nail strips, but they are fun for sure.  I like the design I received and I think that they will work nicely for Valentine’s Day!

Sally Hansen Salon Effects

~Ultraflesh The Gold Standard Mascara in Blackout ($7.89): This brand is new to me, but the mascara is pretty nice.  I think I like the container better than the formula, itself, but how can you blame me?  That container is great!

~Softsoap Nutri Serums Vitamin E Body Wash ($1): I am not opposed at all to receiving drugstore brands in subscription boxes, but, at the same time, I am not overly excited by them.  This will get used (probably by L who goes through body wash like it’s his job) and it does smell pretty good.

~Garnier Fructis Daily Care Fortifying Shampoo ($1): Again I am not opposed to this and I will use it, but I wish they would have sent us the conditioner too.  One of my pet peeves is receiving just one or the other.  I feel like like should always come together.

All totaled I came up with a value of $21.88 for the January 2015 Beauty Box 5.  I wasn’t impressed with this box and was happy I paid less than $7 for it.  It was well over the cost of the box, but I didn’t find it to be overly exciting to me.

I got the same products as you did, but my eyeshadows were all different shades of orange. Clown makeup bright though that I can’t carry off. Maybe WB has the right idea. Eye shadows look an awful lot like some of the powdered pigments that you can use on paper, then set with a mist of water. Since eye shadows aren’t specifically made for that, I’d imagine they might smear, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.

4 different shades of orange shadow?? That sounds bright!

We are box twins! I’m not a fan of the mascara…mine seemed almost dried out.

My eyeshadows are yet another color, and I think they are pretty, but I don’t use eye shadow. They are much more muted tones. This is my last BB5 as I need to cut back on all this stuff. This is a better box for me than usual since I will actually use everything but the eye shadow. I don’t mind drugstore items as long as they are something I can use.

I got the salon effects, soft soap gel, and mascara the same as you but got 2 other products. Both are hard candy brand, one is a baked eye shadow ( the color is “love bug” it’s grey and brownish) and the other is an eyeline in the color “sushi”(it’s pinkish-purple). I am surprised with such a big difference in the boxes this month!

      Yours sounds good!

I keep being told that Ultraflesh is a discontinued company. Does anyone know if this is true?! Ugh…I can’t believe they are sending discontinued products if this is true.

    1. theramblingjen

I saw that in a FB group too. I tried to look it up, but I don’t know. They don’t have a website which is kind of weird.

Yes! And the last time they updated on their own FB page was 2011. Eek.

My Ultraflesh seemed dried out-it took a lot of dips to get one coat, and then it made my lashes feel crusty and dry and irritated my eyes. 🙁 I had to wash it off after a couple hours b/c I couldn’t take it anymore.

I got Hard Candy eye shadow and liner instead of the Coastal Scents and Shampoo. I’ve never tried Hard Candy, and the swatches look fun. The mascara was just awful though. I had to remove it within a couple hours. It felt so crusty and so awful I am actually on here trying to find out if something was wrong with mine. It was so dry.
