Mantry February 2015 Subscription Box Review

I only received one subscription box today which happened to B’s February 2015 Mantry.

If you aren’t familiar with them, Mantry (aka the Modern Man’s Pantry) is a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them.  It’s $75/month and has been around since the Fall of 2012.

Mantry ships via UPS Mail Innovations.  It shipped on Monday and I received it today (on Wednesday).  Mantry always ships on the 20th of the month and bills just a day or two before they ship.

The Crate

I am super excited to report that we have found a use for our old Mantry crates!  B is using them in his bar in the basement!

The Information Card

The February 2015 Mantry theme was “Pizza Party” and included the following items:

~Grey Ghost Lemon Sugar Cookies ($9): These cookies are amazing.  I like them alone, but Mantry’s idea of cutting them in half and adding ice-cream to the middle sounds pretty delicious too.

~The Gracious Gourmet Lemon Artichoke Pesto ($10): There was supposed to be a different brand of pesto in the box, but there ended up being an issue with the supplier and this was substituted.  I appreciate that they gave us the background details and that it didn’t end up delaying the box.  This is supposed to be drizzled on the crust for some extra flavor.

~Hayden Flour Mills Pizza Flour ($9.50): I can’t even tell you the last time we made homemade pizza dough.  It’s been forever.  This entire box is going to get made this weekend and I cannot wait.

~Jar Goods Classic Red Tomato Sauce ($8): Way fancier than any pizza sauce I have had lately!  It’s from Julie’s Restaurant in Hoboken, NJ and is a thick classic sauce.

~Del Duca Prosciutta ($5): This meat is cured so you don’t have to cook it.  You can cook your pizza and then put a few slices on the top and chow down!

~Vermont Smoked Pepperoni ($7): I actually like my pizza without pepperoni, but I think when you are making pizza, it’s essential to snack on the pepperoni.  We’ve tried an assortment of items from this brand and we always like them.

All totaled I came up with a value of $48.50 for the February 2015 Mantry.  I really should stop doing breakdowns on this box because lately, it hasn’t been close to the cost of the box!  I appreciate the curation of this one though and I anticipate that this is going to be one amazing (and expensive) pizza! I will Instagram a picture of it this weekend.

I think Mantry has the best food box available (although Hamptons Lane is pretty cool, too), but I would never sign up because the value of the box isn’t even close to what you’re paying for it. I mean, an almost $30 disparity is pretty significant. I’m wondering how other people feel. Yes, you would definitely spend a lot in shipping to source these individual products, but isn’t that the point of a subscription service-that they source the products for you? I wish the value was better because the Mantry boxes always look amazing!
