Kiwi Crate boxes are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L and I have been doing the projects together together for ages and always have a good time with it. WB’s gets Koala Crate, but his July one hasn’t arrived yet, so he worked on Kiwi Crate with us this month too.
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and generally takes about a week to arrive.
I knew what the theme of this one was going to be before I opened it and I couldn’t wait to get started!
The July 2015 Kiwi Crate theme was “lemonade stand” and included two projects – “my shop sign” and “my cash register”.
Project #1 – “My Shop Sign”
The first project we worked on was “my shop sign”. This project included all of the items you needed to decorate a chalkboard and make your own eraser. It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “creating”, “exploring” and “moving – fine”. I actually would have ranked this one a little higher on the messiness scale because I think chalk makes a mess, but that’s just me.
The instructions for this project were quite simple. WB and I worked on this one together while L worked on the other project in the kit. I did most of the work, but WB for sure instructed me on what to do. Also, every time I would write something on the chalkboard he would immediately erase it. It’s hard to sell lemonade without a sign little guy! LOL!
I think this came out great! L is dying to have a lemonade stand this summer and we will use this chalkboard when we do. I like that it included stencils too so you don’t have to be a great artist to make a cute sign.
Project #2 – My Cash Register
The second project in the crate was “my cash register” and included materials to make a cash register and use it play fun money games. It was low on the messiness scale (this I agreed with), low on the grownup involvement scale and involved “moving – fine”, “discovering” and “communicating”.
L was able to do 99% of this project on his own. I had to help him with a few folds of the cash register box, but that was it! I think he loved this one just as much as I did!
Isn’t this cash register adorable? L and WB were taking turns using the calculator on it. I think it was a nice touch that they included a real calculator so the kids could real add and subscription and make change and everything else that a “real” cash register does.
Also included in the box was a pouch with “math games”. The shop cards go along with the cash register (you have to know how much everything is) and can also be used for these math games. L loves math and loved these too!
As usual, the explore! magazine includes puzzles, games, recipes, stories and additional activities (like creating a paper wallet) relating to the theme.
