Two questions today…

1. What is the biggest home improvement DIY project you have tackled? We haven’t done much in the way of DIY Home Improvement projects other than painting, stripping wallpaper and that sort of thing, but I do love watching and reading about DIY stuff. B actually attempted to refinish the cabinets in our old condo, however, after stripping one, he pretty much decided we were just getting new cabinets (in his defense they were horrible cabinets). But anyway, I am strongly considering trying to talk B into a snap together wood floor in the living room. We both really want “wood” ceramic tile, but that’s not something either of us would attempt as a DIY and it’s much more expensive. Snap together seems much more doable! What have you attempted? How did it turn out?

2. Do you use a paper planner? Or do you track everything on your phone’s calendar? I think my love for paper planners are pretty well established (with my newest love being the Day Designer for Blue Sky planners).  I don’t utilize it as much as I probably could (should), but it helps me track B’s travel / National Guard schedule and also all of the kids classes/activities and appointments and things.  And of course, my own stuff.  I will say that if there is something super “important” happening (like the Nordstrom Anniversary Beauty Bag on Haute Look this Friday), I will set an alert on my phone.  Paper planners are good, but they don’t work well for timed launches that like.
Can’t wait to hear your answers!

I’ve done the snap together flooring and it looks great (people had no clue it wasn’t real floor or thought it was hi-grade laminate) and goes together really fast. I found it was easiest to cut the planks on a table saw with a high count of blades to get the cleanest look on the ends (the boards are plastic with a heavy duty decal on them) and when you had to cut along the wall. Not that I didn’t put quarter round down to cover the edges but I didn’t want to have a bunch of boards all chewed up by the miter saw (and if you have to cut width wise you need the table saw anyway). The only problem I had was if you dropped something heavy or sharp, it was guaranteed to get a hole. Swapping out the board was fairly easy though. In my current house I’m using the kind that has glue on all sides rather than snaps and you only need a box cutter for those. The look just as nice but you have to put them together fairly tight to get a nice look. Both took less than a day for a 14 x 8 room.

Ohh, this is good to hear! Our living room is a square so I wouldn’t think it wood be too hard. Just a lot of boards and “easy” straight line cuts!

I love paper planners but I find that I don’t use them as consistently as I should. I have a home management binder with a calendar but it’s pretty out dated now. I do use a paper planner for my blog but I also use Co-Schedule. I like to track when my boxes ship and when they arrive to give me a good idea from month to month what I can expect for posting purposes. I use my phone for important alerts and reminders though 🙂

What is a Home Management Binder?

I have to remove wallpaper in my daughter’s room and paint her room and two others. I have chosen to ignore this and have summer fun. Or at least that how I look at it. I really just dont want to do it at all AT ALL!
I live by my phone reminding me of everything. I remember most things, but there have been plenty of times that had I not created a reminder I would have been in big trouble. I even set reminders of silly things just to be safe. my brain glitches. I have been considering a large wall calendar for the family tho. It may be good for everyone.
And I completely missed the Nordstrom beauty bag for Friday..I will most likely get one, or try to get one. Thanks for posting that

I have to set a reminder on my phone for half days of school, early releases and that sort of thing! Those always throw me for a loop.

We did our bathroom remodel two years ago – and it is still a work in progress. I want to replace the whole tub and shower this next year. It saved a lot of money doing the work ourselves.

I love planners and stickers! I just bought the bando planner for August but I had been using a personal Filofax. The bando site has some fun stuff I want to get.

    1. Jennifer

      That site is so cute!!!

Did you take a class or just YouTube instructions on all that?

Paper planners only, and I felt that way before my smart phone just up and died yesterday. I’m far less likely to lose or damage a paper planner, and I’ll lprobably have backups for most or all of the information.

    1. Jennifer

Oh no! What happened to your phone? I have deleted my “notes” on my iPhone a few times and about cried when I realized when what I had done.

I haven’t really done any big diy projects… when we lived in a condo, I tore out all of the carpet and stained the cement floor on my own. Replaced a garbage disposal and learned how to properly aug a drain after paying too much to pay a professional to do it since I have a ton of hair. I refinished our cabinets there too, but it looked not good so when we sold it, we had a professional fix it up and install new flooring.

At our new house, which I should stop calling new since we’ve had it for almost exactly a year now, I’ve done a few things. The master bedroom had ugly18″ tiles of wall paper that I’m sure were super glued on the walls. It took forever to get off and I tried everything, special gel, scoring tools, scrapers, razor blades, steamers, fabric softener, you name it. If my sister in law hadn’t helped, I’d probably still be peeling wall paper. After that, I painted everything but the bathrooms, kitchen and garage. Even the huge vaulted ceilings. Changed out all a/c registers and face plates, though I had my dad come over and change out the outlets and switches.

When I was like 20 or 21, my dad showed me how, and helped, to paint my car with his compressor.

I guess the coolest diy I’ve done was in a jewelry class. I drew, cut, soldered and polished a neat sterling silver cuff bracelet. I wish I’d stayed in that class but I dropped due to migraines.

I don’t use a planner or my phone. I have a calendar by my front door where I put my work schedule (though I do get that from an app) and appointments. And a calendar in the office where I track bill dates, even though most of our bills are on auto pay.

I think those are big DIY projects! At my old condo I swear every room had wallpaper and some rooms had multiple layers of wallpaper – one on top of the other. Why people?? Why do they do this. Such a pain to get off. And the lady who used to live in it before me smoked so it stunk too. Gross!

      1. laura r

Oh yeah, the wall paper at my house was stacked on top of eachother too.. like a huge ugly paper machier, fortunately it was only one wall but it probably took my SIL and I a total of 50 hours to get it off at minimum. I don’t think we’ll be buying another house any time soon, but next time I am refusing any house with wall paper unless the seller removes it prior to the sale- they won’t have to paint it, I’m fine with that but I am never ever EVER!!!! going to touch wall paper again.

    1. Home improvement haven’t really done much except help my brother take off his wallpaper when he first bought his home but haven’t done anything at mine other than basic painting and stuff.

    2. I love using paper planners for work and personal related stuff, found a really cute one this year at office Depot.

    1. Jennifer

There are too many cute planners out there! I always look at them at stores and then realize I barely have enough plans for one planner much less multiple planners.

I love the idea of internet based calendars so you can sync with others, but I’m a paper planner girl at heart.

I hate being at an appointment, and trying to find my availability on my phone calendar, then having to type it in before I forget. It takes forever and I feel guilty making the scheduler wait. As a mom, I find it best to have a paper planner, and transfer to google calendar later if I need to sync with someone else.

And…a paper planner never has a dead battery…

    1. Jennifer

I feel the same way about trying to dig something up on my phone. If I am on the phone and trying to make an appointment I have to put them on speaker and dig into my calendar to see if that date / time works.

I use both paper and electronic with my iPhone. I try to write it down now because my iPhone had an issue with an update and wiped all my info. Did you see the Lilly Pulitzer agendas on Nordstrom’s website? They start with August 2015. I got the elephant one. So adorable and fits nicely in my purse.

    1. Jennifer

I did! There are too many cute planners out there!

I used to use paper planners all the time but since my mom was diagnoised with lung cancer last year I’m all about my S5 calendar. Since it is google based I can sync her iphone with my calendar. I keep track of her doctor appts, chemo, my work schedule its really convient for everyone. I like to use a paper planner for all my homework assignments when I’m in school (I’m working on my masters in counseling) and put them in my binder so I can keep track of everything. Anybody else have trouble posting comments?

    1. Jennifer

I think the comments are glitchy sometimes. I commented twice on something earlier because it wasn’t showing at first.

You are right, the sync feature on google calendars is awesome. I hope your mom is doing well!

We haven’t done anything huge here since we had the house built we got most of what we wanted when we had it built however we are also getting to the point where the carpet has to go. We don’t have little ones crawling around anymore and being that it is about 8 years old it is nasty. I’m just not sure I want to do it myself. LOL
M keeps his stuff in a google calendar so I add anything he really needs to know to that but I couldn’t get all of my stuff there and I didn’t like having to click through to read everything so I ordered another EC planner. It has mostly my Disney stuff in it so I can see who needs a planning reminder, payment due etc and then I add all the other fun little things that M just doesn’t care about like book releases, movies coming out, sales etc. Does Ls school give them planners? N just brought home his and they use it everyday. Apparently starting in the 2nd grade the school gives them to the kids every year. I’m loving his school more and more each year.

I love my paper planner. The last couple years I’ve been using Maybooks. They have the perfect amount of space for me, and they are easy to carry in my work bag. Plus, they are pretty! I can’t do the iPhone calendar. But the alerts are super helpful! Good idea to set them for sale events!
